Prologue
These are rectangles (characters) are listed roughly in the order you find them in-game.
I gave a little strategy with each listing to show you their abilities.
Thomas (red)
The conventional hero of the game. Wants to recreate cyberspace so he won't be alone.
He can jump fairly high and often gives Chris a leg up. He breaks many an antigravity fall for James. Helps Claire and Laura jump up ledges, too.
  • Try jumping over ledges before you boost Thomas using his friends. He's got an average jump.
Chris (orange)
The pseudo-antagonist of the story. Low on self-confidence, but with a big heart, Chris is often sent into crawl spaces to flip switches and push buttons. This little guy loves stacking up with Claire, Laura, John and Thomas to vault over walls and make rectangular pyramids. Laura is the only one who can save him from his shattered ego and the body he's trapped in.
  • Don't forget to come back for him!!!
John (yellow)
Champion of long-jumping, this hearty rectangle is forced to leave many rectangles behind to find switches and buttons. He comes back later and gives them a boost.
Claire (blue)
This jolly soul can ferry anyone across water better than a Lapras.
She is second to no one in ability aside from a blue-shifted rectangle. She saves many rectangles from flooding. She's a hero just for that.
She can hop out of water while carrying passengers.
  • Be careful about moving her too fast with passengers after jumping in. The passengers might bounce off.
Also, her jump is better from water to land than on solid ground.
Laura (pink)
This shy rectangle can slide through crevices and be a trampoline landing for many stunts that Thomas' gang like to pull. She often needs a jump boost herself, though and she gets very irritated about being left behind. Like Thomas, she just wants friends.
  • If you pile too many rectangles ontop of rectangle ontop of Laura, she stops bouncing them.
James (green)
This awesome inverted fellow thinks nothing of mountains, but tapered ceilings are a whole different story. He clings to the ceiling like a bat, which is great for the most part, but slightly awkward. Thomas is roughly the same size as him, so if they're stuck together, the can squeeze through mid-air. If on of them jumps straight up or down, the other will "fall" due to gravity. You can move up or down in the air this way.
  • James can get stuck if you don't hop onto ledges in order of size. His jump is average, like Thomas.
Sarah (purple)
This fiesty girl out-jumps everyone else in town. She can cover a long distance in a short amount of time, mostly because of her double-jump. She's a one-woman search party!
Gray (grey)
The power-hungry antagonist. Can use certain codes scattered around to shift into a swimmer, a double-jumper, an antigravity machine, or a bouncy platform. Choose wisely!
Sam & Jo (brown & grey)
The happy couple. They can shift just like Gray. Sam & Jo shift individually. Sam can jump higher, so use that to your advantage and don't leave Jo behind!
Be careful of grey-shifting underwater. If you wait too long, you will sink and die. However, if there is a current to a blue panel, you will shoot out of the water.
Paul (dark grey)
The true hero of the game. Tries to stop Gray. Sadly, Paul is more useless than Chris in terms of jumping standards. He is very determined to save the other AI rectangles. He must often seek the help of Team Jump to avoid obstacles and traverse stairways.
  • Be careful of grey-shifting underwater. If you wait too long, you will sink and die. However, if there is a current to a blue panel, you will shoot out of the water.
Team Jump (white)
Five proud little white cubes. They are known for their stacking skills. Make sure they all get to the finish line!

Edited for consistency! Kudos to MestreLion. Also thanks for the tip about Paul.
I had previously edited this post about shifting, as you can see from the comment history

Nice guide! Mind a few suggestions an corrections?
- Every AI can shift: Paul, Sam, Jo, Grey and Team Jump, so you might adjust their text accodingly.
- Paul is "an old man", that's why he jumps so low
- Sam is the one that jumps higher, not Jo.
- James jumps as high as Thomas. They are identical in size and skills. So they are both either "decent" or "mediocre".
