The best rocket jumps/the most height gained from rocket jumps come from keep holding the Jump button after jumping, shooting a rocket straight down to then bounce off the explosion.
On top of that, some sections of the map seem to be not possible to do without damaging boosting through them because the gap is too wide between platforms. If you're dead set on rocket jumping you might end up dying over and over trying to get through with a rocket jump when all you need is take one damage.
On top of that, some jumps are easier to do if you just use the recoil of the rockets instead of rocket jumps themselves.
There is also one part where it's better to rocket jump off of a flame enemy (that springs up from the lava) in-between the first and second heater (iirc)
I got the achievement when I completed the heater core for the first time.
I never got the spin jump upgrade? Now reading this, I realize now why the game was unnecessarily difficult at times.
