My steps for starting (main idea):
1 - two drones for repair
2 - laser in-line towers for longest parts of the road
3 - slowing-towers near laser
4 - assistant-towers near laser
5 - rocket towers for flying enemy & slowing tower
....

& always (if possible) upgrade existing towers for various parts
