I want to point out that it is possible to build under the water. Don't think that the water in the middle is very deep and has no ground. The pieces you put under the water can be made as a support for your bridge. Only wood pieces are enough as long as you put them correctly.

It is not very possible to see under the water in most of the maps. You must zoom in and scroll down quite a lot. You will not see any grid points under the water as well. But this doesn't mean that you can not place joints there.

The pieces you put under the water will not touch the ground. They will always be a little bit on the air. When you start the simulation, with the gravity the pieces will go down and touch the ground.
