AOE2: Pax Mongolia Scenario Cheese Guide [SUB]
By Nabeghlavi
This is a guide to beat the final AoE 2 Genghis Khan Mongolia Campaign mission (#6) using extreme cheese tactics! It's an annoying mission so it gets the maximum amount of mozzarella, morbier, manachego, maytag blue and some Masdam aged Dutch cheese for one nice and balanced cheese plate. Served best with fresh apples, honey and some fig jam. Enjoy!

Introduction
Greetings and Welcome to the Guide! This is a scenario guide for the final mission of the Genghis Khan Campaign, Pax Mongolia. Extreme cheese tactics will be used. You've been warned :D

If you're opposed to cheese, then you're welcome to try and beat it legitimately. I did try to beat it normally but found it to be an obnoxious mission. I don't play competitive MP or build the perfect economy with 3 million hotkeys. I play this game and campaign for fun. I found the time limit and tactics of the AI to be rather annoying for my playstyle. So it's time to turn the tables on the AI and this rather frustrating mission and drop a whole lot of cheese on the AI.

This is a slice of Dutch cheese on a napkin with carrots for a face. You're welcome! (It was tasty)

Opening Moves
Take 2 of the starting villagers and head directly south to the bridge. Build up some extra villagers, scouting the sheep and the surrounding area with 1 or 2 horsemen. Your early build order without getting too fancy with it is that you want to prioritize FOOD and WOOD. A bit of gold will come later but focus heavily on those two for now, while totally ignoring stone. Don't delete any units, they'll be useful later.

Once you reach the obnoxious bridge of DOOM, it's time to put the first huge wheel of cheese into place. For some unknown reason, the AI will not attack Gates. So build a wall totally out of 3 gates. This will totally block off the bridge and all enemy attacks. You may need to construct a few stone walls to get the gates to face the proper way. Delete any walls after, the enemy will attack those.
This is your ideal gate setup.

Now that the bridge is secure, you can focus on your economy. Continue to build up, focusing almost entirely on food and wood. Skip upgrading anything, you're not going to be fighting the enemy for a while. Take the 2 villagers you used to build the gates and head to the southeast corner. You will find a frozen crossing there.

This the ice bridge crossing to the southeast. Focus on building here.

Once you've explored the ice bridge area, the first building you should make is a siege workshop. This is because you need to two very expensive upgrades to the mangonel. You have to upgrade to the Onager and then the siege onager in order to progress. This will let you see your progress. Both are very wood and food intensive. For now, simply focus on building up your economy and getting these two upgrades. You will want to now put a few villagers on gold, around 4 or 5 should do for now. The only other goal you have is to build 2 trebuchets and get them near the ice bridge (in a safe spot). Even one Trebuchet will do, but you want 2 to be safe. Get at least one built and moving south before upgrading to Siege Onager. Optionally you can build a castle near the ice river for convience if you wish. This is a personal choice. It will make getting more trebuchets easier in the next section. If you do this, put a few villagers on stone.

This tower must be dealt with before your Siege Onagers can break through the forest.

Once you attack this tower, it might stir up the enemy so be prepared and keep your trebs as far south as possible. At this point, you don't want a treb war, the enemy probably has 4 or more. Just work towards getting these goals completed. It will take a lot of food and wood, but it's worth it! Also note that you can build a castle near the ice river for convience if you wish. This is a personal choice. It will make getting more trebuchets easier in the next section. If you do this, put a few villagers on stone.
Deforestation
So you've built your first siege onager or two and you have two trebuchets in a safe position near the very edge of the map. At this point, you can start to tranistion your economy to more gold focus. The need for such heavy food and wood is over. Hopefully you did so fairly fast and Subatai and his fantastic reinforcements haven't even shown up yet. Now is a good time to save your game because you need to be pretty careful with your siege units. Also, be sure to take at least one villager along, possibly two.

Now it's time to start some clear cutting. You want to trash trees with your siege onagers right along the bottom of the map. Make sure to not to accidently clear a path that lets all their units stream in. For this, I set my siege onagers to not attack since they can be idiots. And you will be attacked here. The enemy is going to be pretty salty after not getting any combat. There is one stock trebuchet that might attack. If you stick to the edge of the map, the towers won't present a problem.

This is what your Onager advance should look like.

You may wish to take out the towers, but they aren't a primary goal. Feel free to do so, especially if you have more than 2 trebuchets. After you've clear cut a trail to the bottom corner of the map, it's time to install 2 more gates with that villager.

This is what your new gates should look like. Don't destroy a hole in the wall until the gates are up.

After the gates are built, just destroy the bottom wall chunk with your trebs. Note that any units you have near the edge might get attacked by enemies. They are getting salty! So at this time, I need you to take those "sabateurs" safely down to near the bottom south eastern corner of the map. This will make sense in a minute!
Subotai the Slow Shows Up!
Ok so it's the moment you've been waiting for!!!!
Subotai shows up with his huge horde of.... 2 dogs and some sabateurs. Great.... Just what i wanted!

Despite how worthless his army might seem, take those sabateurs and send them south towards where you've been clear cutting.

Note: At this point you can shift your economy from heavy wood to a lot more gold and possibly stone, depeding on how you want to play. Don't micro too much though, you want to pay attention to the main strategy. You wont need units till the next section so just keep building resources, possibly doing a few blacksmith upgrades in the meantime.

Leave Subotai and his wolves collecting dust like the worthless fake cheese that they are. Just focus on getting his sabateurs down safely with the group of other ones.

Safe sabeteurs on the south side. For bonus points note Mangudai in position behind.

So the gates were a nice cheese plate. Now we're going full deluxe, 190 Swiss Franc three course fonude dinner on the AI. Make a save here and then bring all your sabateurs through the two south gates. You'll probably pass the enemies, but they will not attack : )

Be sure to yell "elnézést" (Hungarian for excuse me) at your screen when passing by their units unattacked :D

Around this time, you might get the story message that the Hungarians have blown the bridge and it will refocus your camera. A few junk units might attack your gates but ignore them. You will also soon get the message that the enemy is building a wonder. While this is going on, upgrade your unique unite to elite, the Mangudai. Build a few extra and get them ready to attack in the second wave.

Move your way forward knowing the only thing that will attack your sabateurs are towers and castles. Of the two, you'd be best to avoid the castles since they shoot a lot more. You want to head west, but slightly north as well. There's a castle parked in the center that you wish to avoid. There's also a nice little gold mine with busy villagers. It would really be a true shame if it got sabotaged!

This gold mine is a golden oppertunity to take out 3 villagers at once!

Now you want to continue on west towards the town center. You really want to keep north and avoid the castle!

Our sabs are keeping north, avoiding the castle and then heading towards the town center.

One or possibly two of your sabateurs might die due to castle or cannon fire but this is ok. Continue westard until you find the town center. Once you do, you want to attack it with sabs in a strategic fashion. They cause spash damage but not to themselves. Therefore, the first attack you do will do damage to a villager and the town center if placed correctly. This will cause them to ring the bell.

You will need to send 4 or 5 sabs to finish off the building, but do it fast and keep them close. If done correctly, you can blow up a lot of the villagers that just exited the very damaged town center.
Take out the town center with a sab, then the wonder they are building. Be sure to aim the attack of the wonder right near the builder(s). Most likely, they will feebly try to start building the wonder one more time which you will quickly blow up once again.

This is basically what should happen to their wonder x2. I wonder where it went? :P

After this, as strange as it sounds... just use each sab to kill a single villager whenever possible. You want to damage their economy beyond repair. It might seem like a waste but at this point the sabs have done their duty. You'll see a few villages walking back, just 1v1 them with the sabs. To west is a tiny mill setup with a few farmers, so take that crap out.

Peaceful community gone to cheese...

At this point, if your sabs cannot find any more villagers.... You've built up some gold so take...
SPIES!!! There should only be about 4-7 villagers left, you can afford it.

Wrap up the Leftover Cheese
After those attacks, the Hungarian economy should be devastated. This doesn't mean that they will just roll over like a mangalica (a Hungarian pig that is quite delicious). You will need quite some units to mop up their forces but by this time their economy should be broken. When I won this scenario, the AI was quite salty and required me to not only destroy every single unit, but every single tower as well. Irregardless, this guide will take the pressure off the annoying time limit of their cheesy wonder and let you destroy them at your own pace.

@ Fagio I would say this isn't viable at all... DE has changed a lot of stuff. It seems a TON easier. I was able to get the achievement for killing the enemy tc and castles before subotai shows up.... Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK9PeprL8CY for DE. I did it first try and sadly this guide is outdated but DE rocks!

Great guide, precise and on point. I didn't believe that gates were going to be left alone until I realised that I was still attacking the AI over them and triggered their aggression. A couple points to note:
- Skirmishers may also attack the Saboteurs while they roam across the Polish base.
- Do not attack the treb when entering, it triggers the whole army against you.
- Despite what the mission text says, you do have access to Petards. They do only 25 damage compared to the 100 of Saboteurs and are less armored, but being able to beef up the first incursion really helps.
- Do NOT build the eventual castle on the other side of the frozen water bridge, and possibly don't even exploit the mines there: Skirms may pick them up and attack.
- Siege Onagers researchs require Gold, not Wood.

I was able to mop up the remaining forces with 3 trebs, roughly 30 hussars and 20 arbalests. Melee infantry helpful but not necessary.

Is this still viable in AoE2:DE?
