The origins of the Union of Soviet Socialist Planets began in the year 1989. It was this year that scientists of the Soviet Union discovered the technology of time travel, which bankrupted the USSR, causing its imminent collapse.

Amidst the ensuing chaos, a handpicked team of scientists and engineers traveled back in time to the year 1929, where modern technology and maps of (yet undiscovered) oil fields were shared with the newly reformed USSR. Under the leadership of Josef Stalin, the Soviet Union launched its first orbital satellite by the year 1930. The first nuclear weapons were operational by the year 1933, and after a demonstration of the atomic bomb's power in 1935, every nation on Earth was peacefully assimilated into the Union.

The first interstellar journey was launched in the year 1959, using a spacecraft with a modification of the original time machine of 1989. This gave the craft the ability to travel great distances by altering local space-time. (This device was later nicknamed the "jump drive.")

The first colonization of an earth-like planet in the Alpha Centauri star system commenced in the year 1979, after 20 years of interstellar travel, and it was on this date that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was renamed to the Union of Soviet Socialist Planets.

By the current year of 2077, the entire Alpha Centauri system has been explored, and engineers of the USSP have spread far and wide across space, developing increasingly advanced ships to complete their eternal mission of traversing the universe.

But something is wrong. Out in the farthest reaches of space, there are rumors of strange, garbled radio transmissions...

And they are in English.

The three ships Red October, Admiral Kuznetsov, and Akula represent the first generation fleet of USSP ships. These ships are primitive in comparison to the second generation fleet, the first of which is the Moskva.
