How to make flat-looking stuff in SFM

uuuh HEY
hello, this is my first guide so it will be kinda bad but hang with me for a second ok

i am going to show you how to do this thing


now you may be thinking "wow santum that looks really easy i dont need a guide for this"

and to that i say

uuuuuuh

Yup,,,, guide time
so you may be wondering why anyone would ever want to do this. i actually do have an answer for this:
  • For creating icons
  • For YouTube thumbnails
  • For the a s t h e t i c
with that said, allons-y, as the spanish say.

Step 1:
Open black_void (if you never used sfm before, have fun taking 3 hours figuring out how to load a map. its not really as easy as it seems). Disable lighting so you can see what's going on.

Step 2:
Move the camera so it's facing a corner.

Step 3:
Create an Animation Set for the camera and sliiiiiiiiide that 85 mm slider all the way.

Step 4:
Place whatever you want in the scene and rotate it so it's 45 degrees. You want to make it look kinda sorta isometrical.

Step 5:
ok this is just a picture of the thing before lighting idk what its doing here

Step 5 for real:
Enable lighting again and create a light. Disable shadows on it.

At this point you've done most of the work so give yourself a high-five or a pat on the back or whatever you do to tell yourself you did a good job.

Step 6:
While still on the Graph Editor, click on the light on the animation set editor and move the scroll wheel on your mouse until everything is being... uuh... lighted on? I don't know English.

edit: the word i was looking for is "lit".

Step 7:
After all of that is done, set the AO Mode to Outlines only and set the samples to something above 64.

Step 8:
Edit the picture in your program of choice and you're done!
in conclusion...
congration you done it! remember however, keep in mind anything here, especially the camera and lighting, you can edit. these are just what i did. by the way...

this works great for stuff like the engi's buildings or the merc's weapons...
...but with characters?
....not so much

This looks like punch out wii/porderlands type stuff and i love it.(I've been wondering if this was possible in sfm and now I know that it is!
