The West German Bundeswehr (Federal Defense) wore American M1 Helmets (and the uniform itself became more Americanized, but with German insignia on it. In the early years of Post War West Germany, the Bundeswehr used the traditional Stahlhelm, but with Nazi decals gone and replaced with Federal German symbols.
East German's Volksarmee (People's Army) choose a helmet slightly modeled after the WWII Stahlhelm, but to prevent offenses with their Warsaw Pact Ally, The Soviet Union they choose a Helmet shape away from the traditional Stahlhelm. Despite this change of a German Communist Army's Helmet, the GDR Military uniform still has more a German heritage (sometimes said to look similar to the Third Reich, but with Communist symbolism) to it's appearance.
