Looking back, I might have been able to do more on my own if I used physical notes for tracking non-ship-role details and used the "X others were present" detail to track individual still-living people throughout the Obra Dinn's story .
(But a stronger nudge/hint that may spoil:) The most possible cause of this "hot and bright" is also acceptable.

I would like to add for guessing not obvious crewmates that identifying racial features can also help significantly in some scenes where their name is never mentioned.
