Kingdom Management Basics
By Marcos_DS
Basics of Kingdom Management in Pathfinder:Kingmaker. It seems many people have problems with kingdom management, so i decided to make a short list of the essentials that come up again and again in the forums.

Kingdom Management 101
The Basics

  • If there is a big crisis, do not wait, don't do a bunch of sidequests, get to it ASAP. Especially don't waste precious time with the projects that fast forward 14 days.
  • If there is a big crisis, do not wait, don't do a bunch of sidequests, get to it ASAP. I really mean it, the game will spawn additional and harder problem events that will sooner or later prevent you from assigning advisors to all problems. This can lead to a downward spiral that might end your kingdom and your game. If you wait really long, there is even an event that will just end your kingdom (with no way at all to handle it successfully). You can still solve your sidequests and build your kingdom afterwards, I promise...
  • If a new chapter starts, make a hard save. Not a quicksave, a save called "ChapterXStart". If you follow the first rule everything should work out, but better safe than sorry...
  • You can only access your kingdom management screen when you are inside your barony. It doesn't have to be your capital city, any area you claimed will work. Warning: This includes getting notifications about events (specifically, not getting them outside!).
  • The most common kingdom events must be adressed before the start of the next month, so make sure you return to friendly lands before the end of the month and adress all problems (since they can really take you down), and then with leftover advisors adress opportunites.
  • Certain projects like adding new lands or upgrading an advisor automatically progress time by 14 days. Save beforehand, and try to time them at the start of the month (so you still have some time to adress new problems and opportunities before months end). If you get a new problem and your advisor is already occupied with an opportunity, break off the opportunity (if it won't finish before the problem due date). Problem cards can take your kingdom down, opportunity cards only offer an option to improve some stats but have no negative consequences if ignored/failed.
  • You can buy BPs at a rate of 1 BP = 80 gold from the merchant on the central square
  • Upgrading a village to a town requires 3 regions, the upgrade of the 2nd village to a town requires 5 regions etc. A city requires 3 towns. Also the town upgrade requires at least 6 building slots filled in the village. Upgrades are done via projects and pop up automatically when requirements are met.
  • To upgrade a building, it must be in a town (tier 2) or city (tier 3). After that, simply click on the building, then on upgrade.
  • You get additional advisors by leveling the relevant kingdom stat to 60 and his Rank to III. E.g. Hagrim will introduce the arcane advisor when you reach divine 60 and Divine Rank III.
  • You can improve your advisors success rate by leveling up the appropriate rating. For example, each level of economy adds +2 to the economy advisors roll. If the advisor is a companion, you can also improve the appropriate stat by adding e.g. a headband of intelligence to your economy advisor. Its basically a roll of d20 + 2*rank + stat bonus vs a DC (like a skill check, but the skill rating is the kingom rank).
  • Your BP income is 30 + trade agreements + half of the sum of your governent ranks (each capped at economy rank). As soon as you become a kingdom, the flat 30 bonus is removed, but you get the full sum of your government ranks (capped at economy). In any case, it makes sense to keep the economy updated to be as high or higher than the other ranks.

And thats it. Focus on problems before opportunities, check your kingdom before the turn of the month, and solve any crisis with absolute priority, and you can get a prospering kingdom soon...
Time Management
Part of the reason some people have trouble with kingdom management due to the time required for traveling in their kingdom. Here are some timesaving tips:

  • Hunting can supplement your diet, but especially in the first ~8 levels will need extra time if you rely on it: if you don't have enough food, you will hunt until you do. Instead, buy and use camping supplies and only hunt to stretch them out.
  • Build teleportation circles in your settlements (requires Arcane III) to instantly travel from town to town
  • With that in mind, place your towns strategically adjacent to recurring quest areas. E.g. close to olegs trading post, the witch hut, and silverlake.
  • Also, getting a new region+settlement should have priority so you can access the kindom screen while traveling there and also build teleportation circles (Requirement: Arcane 40 + Rank II)
  • If you have the Thiefling DLC, you get a project that improves travel time in the mountains. Very worthwhile upgrade since mountain travel speed is quite low
  • A regional update improves travel speed by 20%

He really should show, he is at the northern end of the western path when you first meet him (before troll quest), then after about a week after troll trouble starts you should get a quest to check him out (again). Always worked for me, but maybe someone on the main board knows more about missing him...

OK. I got Jubilost.
What do I do if Bartholomew doesn't show?

Been all over the Lone House location, and he's nowhere.

You could rush the troll questline to get Bartholomew Delgado from the Lone House as an advisor (he can also fill the economic role). However, i would recommend to load a savegame and get Jubilost (defend him from the kobolds, then save his cart), so you don't miss out his personal story quest (and don't need to wait for the second economic advisor).

What do I do if Jubilost won't come out of the frelling river after the initial meeting? As long as he stands there, I have no economic advisor, which I'm pretty sure is crippling me to death.

Thanks atholk, fixed that.

I read somewhere else that the BP income is that the 30 BP comes from the Aldori, and you pay half of your other earnings to the Aldori in taxes.

When you break away as a kingdom, the 30 BP from the Aldori stops, and you stop paying taxes to them.

Can't comfirm as I haven't gotten that far as yet.

Added a link to your steam guide Ikarius, thanks for taking the time to create all the tables!

Hey folks, I'm the author of the guide on reddit, and I've reformatted my guide and posted it as a steam guide now, so this is... not so needed anymore. I may grab a couple of the tips from this for the beginning section.

Normally you should be able to finish the questline in a month (or max 2) which is really what the first 2 recomendations are about: The monster spam events only happen in high frequency if you take to long to complete the main quest. I will add a line about making a hard save at the start of each chapter.

Marcos_DS happened in Chapter 2 get spammed with Monster and plague events more then I can deal with as I'm getting multiple a month can't get to through quest fast enough and Kingdom falls whether I clear quest line or not because I fail a bunch of events I have not enough advisors to deal with them all
