Preparing For Treeguards
Treeguards can be dangerous foes if you are not prepared for their attack. The main way to prepare for a Treeguard is to expect it. A good way to see if a Treeguard is about to spawn is if you select your axe and hover over a tree with your cursor. If it says "ATTACK" then a Treeguard will spawn.
Information About Treeguards
Treeguards only spawn after you have chopped down a certain amount of trees. There is another version of Treeguard called the Poison Birchnut Tree. Once they spawn you can either fight them using the tips in this guide (or your own knowledge and strategies) OR you can run and leave the Treeguard. It will lose interest after a while. If you lead it to Beefalo (much like hounds or spiders) and it hits one on accident the Beefalo will attack it in a swarm.
Treeguard Stats
Treeguards have different sizes. Each size has a different set of stats.

Lumpy and normal.
Fighting The Treeguard
When a Treeguard spawns, don't just run away! Take advantage of this walking supply of living wood and monster meat! To fight a Treeguard and taking NO damage (if done successfully) you must run, then dart in. Let it swipe, but don't engage yet. Once it swipes and you dodge hit it three times by pressing the F key. Then quickly dart away. Repeat this until it dies. If you have a road/path or walking cane then you can try four or five hits.

Even though it seems like it should be true, axes do the same amount of damage as usual. Spears and other weapons that do more damage are still better. Same goes for Lucy the axe. It does NOT do more damage than a spear or tentacle spike against a Treeguard of any size.
Other Ways To Get Living Wood
The easiest way is to find the totally normal tree in the forest biome. The worst thing about it is that it is surrounded by dark flowers, which drain sanity. The tree will drop two living logs when chopped down and an additional one when you dig up the stump.

Another way is to wait until Winter and let Deerclops spawn. If you do and you stand near a large amount of trees then Deerclops will destroy the trees and spawn Treeguards. They will be hostile towards Deerclops and will be killed by him. Then once Deerclops moves on you can pick up the loot.
