rekt's L4D Voice Line Radial Menus Tutorial (WIP)
By mitty
Have you ever been playing the original Left 4 Dead, and your teammates won't stop spamming those nonsense, out-of-context voice lines? Do they flood your eardrums with the sweet serenade of death screams and profanities? Have you ever wished that you could be as hip and sophisticated as they are? Well, wish no more, friend, because have I got just the thing for you!

What is this guide?
This is a tutorial on how to install and use a radial menu mod of my own design for Left 4 Dead. If you don't know, radial menus are those handy little things in L4D that allow you to map several voice lines to a single key. Just press the key, move (or don't move) your mouse in one of eight directions, and release to select the indicated voice line. By default, Left 4 Dead only gives you 2 or 3 radial menus, just for the vocalizations vital to team communcation. But with this mod, you have access to much, much more! So let's get started!
Things you should know
This guide is a work in progress. I'll be taking feedback and revising it as I see fit to ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience with the mod.

This mod has a lot of vocalizations, so it needs a lot of keys. Be aware that installing this mod will automatically override the use of the following keys:
G, H, J, Z, X, C, V, B, N, M
If you have any commands bound to these keys that you want to keep, you can bind them to different keys by starting up Left 4 Dead, and selecting Options > Keyboard/Mouse > Edit Keys/Buttons.

Also, if you have other radial menu mods installed, be aware that this mod might override them or otherwise be incompatible with them.

Any other questions or comments? PM me or comment below!
Step 1: Getting the Files
You need two custom files for this mod: "radialmenu.txt" and "autoexec.cfg". Both are available via the Dropbox links below. Click on the links, and select Download.

radialmenu.txt:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y54srk9657bw48y/radialmenu.txt?dl=0

autoexec.cfg:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6er4zz0hhqcf9wq/autoexec.cfg?dl=0
Step 2: Installing the Mod
Now that we have the files, we just need to put them in the right places. Open File Explorer (or your preferred method of viewing files). When I tell you to navigate somewhere, just click on each of the folders in sequence as they appear.

Note: Your Steam folder is probably in C:/Program Files (x86), where it goes by default. If it isn't, you'll just need to find where you decided to put it.

Navigate to C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead/left4dead/scripts. There should already be a "radialmenu.txt" in the scripts folder. Move it to a safe place (or delete it, if you don't care about keeping it). Then, drag our custom "radialmenu.txt" from the Downloads folder to the scripts folder.

Navigate to C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead/left4dead/cfg. (If you're in the scripts folder, you can just back out of that folder and go to the cfg folder.)

If you DO NOT see an "autoexec.cfg" already there, just drag our custom "autoexec.cfg" from the Downloads folder to the scripts folder.

If you DO see an "autoexec.cfg" already there, you'll need to open our custom "autoexec.cfg" in Notepad, copy the entire text, open the existing "autoexec.cfg", and paste our custom code under all the existing text.

And, voila! The next time you start up Left 4 Dead, the mod will be installed.
Step 3: Using the Radial Menus
So now that you've got a whole new set of toys, you may be feeling overwhelmed by all the options. In any event, it's worth getting a closer look at what a few of the vocalizations do, as some of them are context-sensitive.

[Z] Contains some general-use lines for directing the others' attention and identifying things.
  • Look: If you're looking at another Survivor, you'll say the Survivor's name. Otherwise, you'll say "Look!" or "Over there!", no matter what else you may be looking at.

[X] Contains some general-use lines for basic social communication. This one is actually identical to the default X radial menu.

[C] Contains the infamously silly death scream, as well as alerts for hordes and Special Infected.

[V] Contains more "panic buttons", mostly for tricking the other players into thinking that something terrible is happening.
  • Hunter's on...: Only works if you're looking at another Survivor when you say it. Even then, there's a considerable delay before your Surivovr actually says "Hunter's on [Survivor]!"

[B] Contains even more silly lines, for causing general chaos and confusion among your friends.
  • Lock the door: Only works if you're in a safe room or other safe area when you say it.

[H] Contains lines typically said when healing/reviving or being healed/revived.
  • Need healing: Only works if you're looking at another Survivor when you say it. You can use this to pester another Survivor for their first aid kit, even if they don't have one.

[J] Contains lines about leading, positioning, and direction of the team.
  • Together: If you're in a safe room or other safe area when you say it, your Survivor will tell the others to get inside.
Step 4: Survivor-Specific Menus
On top of the vocalizations available to every Survivor, there are a few that only some Survivors can use.

You'll need to prime these ones manually, and that's what the G key is for. Press G to bring up the Character Select radial menu, and select the Survivor you're playing as: Bill, Francis, Louis, or Zoey. Keep in mind, you'll need to do this the first time you play after starting the game up, as well as when you switch Survivors.

Once you've selected your character, you can access their unique vocalizations on the N and M keys. Some of these lines may spark unique conversations with the others, so experiment with them, and have fun!

In short, use G to select your Survivor, and use N and M to say their unique lines.

Hey I know it's a long shot asking in an old thread like this, but have you managed to make zoey whistle? I've done my fair share trying and I just can't. I'm guessing it's situational, but I don't even remember where she can whistle in the campaigns.

No problem, glad to help!

I've updated this guide to use the patched autoexec.cfg.

That did the trick! I put the commands you suggested to me into the "autoexec.cfg" and it registered perfectly. Thanks again man!

Thank you for your feedback, Dragon Attack!

Try executing the following command in the developer console:

bind "n" "+Voc1"; bind "m" "+Voc2"

(To enable developer console if you haven't already, go to Options -> Keyboard/Mouse, and select "Enabled" for "Allow Developer Console". By default, the developer console can be opened by pressing the [~ `] key, typically in the top-left of your keyboard.)

Please let me know if that works for you! I'll be sure to patch the relevant file in Dropbox if this solution is effective.

Hey man, this guide was super helpful! I do seem to have one problem though, the survivor specific lines just aren't working for me. I load up a game and select the survivor with "G" but then when I hit the "N" and "M" keys nothing shows up. Any ideas?
