The crates not only drop mats, but also ammo, orbs, and anywhere from 50-250+ dosh (higher yields come from later areas of course). A single crate won't have ya laughing to the bank, but it will add up over missions. Cides, if yer really trying to grind out a specific resource (coughrubedocough), it's a heck of a lot more common in canisters for resources to drop, in my personal experience.

Ugh, not really helpful to me

I wouldn`t say #10 is secret, since on defense mission, enemies often stuck up there. You HAVE to get up there to finish them off, or else the wave won't end.
