A tip you should add is exploring wreckage/boxes with a scanner. That's the quickest fast-track in progression.
Thats why its not in the guide. You restricting your own inventory slots and instead of getting resources back to base you end up going where you shouldnt.
Yes, it takes up room so I can't carry as much crap, so I leave it behind if I'm just gathering materials. However, when out exploring caves or inside wrecks, it's saved my life more often than anything else, as on my first playthrough I usually drowned rather than getting eaten or whatever. And with the spare tank, though I occasionally had to return to empty my inventory, that occurred far less often than I would have needed to return to get more air with only had one tank.
