Ares Combat Industries' Picket was designed to be more of a survey and information gathering vessel than a combat capable warship. The Republic needed a ship to explore and survey new star systems and planets. Also having a very small crew was vital in order to increase its operating efficiency. Therefore, ACI came up with the Picket. An unusually lightly armored ship featuring only the slightest amount of offensive weaponry. The Picket focuses more on sensors and other equipment needed to collect data. ACI's engineers did also decide equip the ship with a pair of probes. This way the crew could spare itself the trip to certain planets by watching the probes from afar. However, the Picket also proved useful as an anti-fighter corvette.
