On the varieties of Museum that may be encountered
Welcome to The Museum of Unnatural Curiosity! Or a Museum. The Museum you happen to be visiting may manifest itself in many different ways. In an attempt to categorize all its variations, we have devised the following scales:

  • Academic interest
  • Beauty
  • Morbidity
  • Controversy
  • Insanity

Every item which a given manifestation of the Museum happens to contain contributes to these scales. In turn, it is possible to use these scales to predict the reception which a given Museum will receive when it opens in its particular iteration of The City of Keys.
Museum Displays
There are many items from throughout the House which may be on display in the Museum.

Completion and Controversy
While the Museum is capable of holding any number of exhibits and can continue expanding indefinitely, at some point the Curator will decide that their Museum is complete and ready to open. In order to ensure sufficient interest, there must be enough exhibits to raise the combined Academic Interest, Beauty, and Morbidity to 200.

It is also worth observing that highly controversial museums (Controversy > 40) have been observed to include exhibits lauding the Governor, in an attempt to curry favor and avoid arrest and closure. When done successfully, these exhibits increase completion by 5% and reduce Controversy by 20, but also reduce Academic Interest by 10. They also increase the Curator's reputation in the City of Keys by 1. When they are not successful, the Curator junks them and nothing changes.

The inspectors have also been known to take hefty bribes (500g) to ignore a few exhibits (Controversy -10).
Opening day
When a given Museum opens its doors, a number of things have been observed to happen:

  1. If the Governor is unhappy (Controversy > 60), he will send his Man to shut down the museum.
  2. If the Museum is a focus point for madness (Insanity > 90), things go crazy. (Distinction: Curator of the Wandering Museum, x1 Bleak Fable, +6 Insight, +6 Esoterica, +6 Guile, -1 Stability: The City of Keys, -10 Reputation: The City of Keys)
  3. Otherwise, determine which remaining category is the highest, among Academic Interest, Beauty, Insanity, and Morbidity.
    • Insanity: Things still go crazy.
    • Academic Interest: The Museum is a huge success. (+10 Reputation: The City of Keys, +10 Esoterica, Distinction: Curator of Enlightenment, monthly profits)
    • Beauty: The Museum is a huge success. (+8 Reputation: The City of Keys, +2 Reptuation: Cities of Angels, Knives, Masks, Bridges, Engines, +10 Spirit, Distinction: Curator of a Grand Exhibition, monthly profits)
    • Morbidity: The Museum is a moderate success. (+10 Reputation: The City of Keys, monthly profits) It also becomes haunted. (Distinction: Curator of the Macabre, x1 Disquieting Incident, +10 Insight)

Additionally, in the circumstances where the Governor does not shut down the Museum and the Museum doesn't go wandering, a Philosophy Engine has been observed being delivered to the curator after the opening.

I am working on an Achievement Guide and hope you don't mind if I link your excellent guide from it.

Good question. I've tracked that down, and also managed to find the trigger for adding a pro-Governor exhibit in the same section of the file. Both have been added to the guide!

One question: do the game files contain any information on how much donating each item increases the percentage of museum completion?

A superb guide! This will come in very handy for getting those museum achievements. Thanks for putting the guide together.

BLESS! I know people on the forums have been puzzling out how to get each one, so glad to have a guide for it. <3
