Overall:
Well i will try cover up the basics for all the newcomers in rome 2 and might give some insight for you old rags who still play this game... ( such as i do)
Will talk about each unit, their role, and how to fit them in your killing power
Militia Hoplites, Lybian Hoplites
You will eventually bumb up with this fellows one day, they are the basic garrison unit for greek city states here is all you need to know

- They have access to hoplite wall- it passive increases damage against only infantry- keep it in mind
- They have decent missile block chance and are pretty cheap meat shields
- They have the formation atack - and it sucks, just turn that off at the start of the battle
- They are cheap, but dont expect them do defeat units at that price range

Where do they fit?
- They are your go to meat shield with all greek factions that are civilized - keep them in front of archers to absorve a volley or two if the enemy has fire at will on, it keeps cav at bay from charging your archers and making them running away, and if he yolo charges you , focos on more important units while they eat your useless militias alive ( dont tell them that though)

- They are excelent in supporting flanking cav units, greek meele cav is overall inferior to most other cav and their shock cav have bad stayng power, so what you do is charge your cav, follow up with this guys and them retreat your cav, if you are facing another cav unit you might as well just leave your cav in the fight so they cant run away and your spears will tear them appart, and if you are losing that skirmish, at least you still have most of your cav alive

- They are good back liners in late game, when your main infantry is charging the enemy they can keep cav away from your archers and the back of your infantry line, also good for hunting down skirmishers

- PS: I dont care what the game wheight for them is, they will get melt down in a frontal cav charge... just keep in mind , that most of them will just get hurt and survive that charge, if you mismicro your cav in one of this, they are as good as gone
Eastern Spearman, Vigiles, Numidians, spears and spear warriors and Spartan Youths
Well this guys... they suck... but sometimes you got to deal with what is left...

- They are bad in every aspect, even at the low cost it is controversy if you should use them at all, the best players i know never pick them at all

- They are mostly meatshields and they suck in that too, they die/break away too fast to actually make a difference

- You will want to use them to waste enemy killing power, drawing up shots from archers/ precursor voleys to save up your very expensive army core

- They are fairly fast, so catching skirmishers would be a valid option if they didnt broke to any unit your enemy have in reserve

- If for a miracle on of this survive to late game, you can use them to try surrounding an enemy, making a heavy unit exausted from chasing them arround or just as a cav support...
(I once charge them into an ongoing cav fight where my cav would win anyway as parthia, i lost over 60 eastern spearman fighting 15% of a cav unit, they suck...)

Here we see an ilustrative picture of an eastern spearman holding against a cav charge
Medium Spearman/hoplites- Auxiliary infantry, Persian/thureos/scythian/periokoi/light hoplites
This are the mostly hated units in game, because when people use them they think they are a medium unit, so they are fast with good holding power, right?
No, that is worsing them spending an HM on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ magicark, dumb dumb, this guys are the slightly better version of the militia hoplites, and that is pretty much it.

- They WILL NEVER, i fell the urge to reapeat this, NEVERRR expect them to hold a line, they wont, just dont try this at Rome kids , hehe : )

- Ok, so they are expensive, cant be used as infantry, so what i use them for?

- Basicly nothing, they are fairly unbalance in the current game, they will lose to pretty much all meele infantry, they dont have javelins to weak down cav with, they die too fast to missile fire, frontal cav charges will put them down so cav can pull trought you, and their morale is still too low...

- If you really want them, well they can be used as more sturdy versions of the meat shields and in formation you can use missile units to javeling enemy flanks while they eat them alive...

- You can use the to support cav because they are fairly fast, and mop up remainders of the infantry fight, but i will tell you right now, if you put one of this 400 - 530 unit against a 700 tribal warrior with 50% of its strenght and tired, you prob will lose that fight in the long run...

- There is a gold point for using them though- if a cav unit charges them and you can counter charge with your own cav, the enemy cav will not be able to run away, because they are pretty damn fast, but that oportunity is rare, and they get kills very slowly...
The Cav Slayers- Every Spear infantry from Getare ( starting on heavy spears), all merc. spears for egypt, Armenian Noble Spears
Well this are the best of the best -of the worse units in the game...
Most of them have Cav conter tatics, which balances the fact of a spear unit without javelins...
They are pretty fast, and resistence to fatigue in general
If you get them into to a cav fight you will see the enemy cav drop as flyes

- Mostly you need to know this guys are expensive, their price range is arround 480- 850

- They are fast, most of them dont got the formation atack - but they still cant hold a line against infantry and they going to get flatted by a frontal cav charge, so i put them all on the same group

- They are usually seccond lines, with their high charge rating, they are amazing at back atacks, they exceed in supporting on cav fights and running after skirmishers, killing any remainer of the enemy cav and keeping the pressure out of your main force

- They are fairly fragile to continous damage, so archer fire, precursors and cheap meatshields (expecially meele ones) will tear this guys down and they will end up not payng for thenselves

- Their armor is inferior to what you would expect from a unit on this price, so they wont last long in meele against sturdy infantry units

- They are very mobile, you can make them run away from a heavy unit they can beat and exaust it

- Even though cav can flat them they will suffer for it, they have amazing cav counter skills, they also can kill elephants and charriots, but it is a harder fight for them

- Dont expect them to be your main army composition, they are mostly support for cav in flanks or rear

And remember kids: If you are doing it right your enemy will look like this:
