Custom Portraits
By Moriarty
I will get straight to the point: when I saw only one viable option to chose from, when it comes to portrait of my main character, I couldn't stand it. So after a while of digging through game files I found a solution. (Sorry for my english; it's not my main language).

How it's made?
  • First of all you need .dds file editor, preferably GIMP, with .dds plugin, downloadable from here: https://code.google.com/archive/p/gimp-dds/downloads
  • Next you have to find file caled: creature_icons.dds . It should be in: (Letter of drive, where you installed your game):\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpellForce 3\bin_win32\textures\interface (I suggest making copy of said file).
  • Then you have to prepair your own portrait in any format, in size 256x256 pixels.
  • Next, you open the file in GIMP, and find portrait from character creation you would like to replace. I recommend using rectangle selection tool. Portraits are about 256x256 pixels in size, and are placed one by one, so be careful to not select part of neighbor of your target.
  • When it's selected just copy and paste your portrait, compile layers together (anchor icon, on pasted layer) and save. Done! Now you have your own, customized portrait in game. Good luck :)

For anyone doing this for Reforged, this no longer works exactly the same. Instructions I found for on the spellforce Discord below:

go to your SpellforceThree folder and look for an app called "PakInspector"
Open it and open the package inside bin_exp1_win32
There, go to textures\interface and extract creature_icons_01.dds
put it into \SpellForceThree\bin_mods_win32\YourMod\textures\interface
and add portraits in empty spaces. You can also resize it to create more space for you to use

The next step is optional, if you replace existing pictures then it is unneeded
Once that's done you'll have to create a new config file but this step depends for what characters you want to add the portraits to

Ok. Thank you.

create a mod in-game and put the edited files into your newly created folder in bin_mods_win32

Ok. Extracting is well and good, also editing them. But how do you get them back in the game?

It's still possible to extract and edit them and it's possible to add completely new portraits without replacing any. Just use the PakInspector located in your game folder to extract what you want.

Unfortunately it's not possible anymore to change the portraits by using GIMP because the creature_icons are compressed in .PAK files. And I've tried anything to unzip the files but nothing worked...
Alternatively you can still change the Portraits in SpellForce 3 Legacy (old game). But you dont have the expansion from Reforced.

So what settings do i have to use to export the dds file in Gimp (now Gimp has the dds plugin included by default. After i export the image i see the portraits all green or blue in game.

Theres an easier way to do this i found

First. Download paint.net
Second. Open the creature_icons.dds with paint.Net
Third. Use the square selection tool on the image you want to replace
Forth. Press delete this will remove the image in the square you drew
Fifth. Open and copy with paint.net the image you want to use
Sixth. Draw a square with selector tool where image used to be and paste
