"(Trail of Tears 1831 - 1850)
In this particular piece, Van Gogh expresses himself through the use of pointilism, a practice which George Seurat adopted as well. Van Gogh, after shortly missing this period with his birth in 1853, seems to show his empathy for the native americans and their losses during the event. The green light in the background exemplifies all of native american history being swiftly taken away at the simple tip of a rancher's hat. The contrast of dark color with the rancher shows his dominance, given to him by none other than Andrew "Ol' Hickory" Jackson. The point of the painting is not to make the viewer feel sorry for the native americans, it is to make the native americans feel sorry for the viewer."
