You will need to make a new character because chances are you don't have any that haven't done the intro mission. You can make your character anything you want as long as you do the following two things.

A. You should make sure that you are in casual.

B. You shouldn't have skip intro selected.

If you have done A. and B. then you are ready to move onto the next step to becoming almost useless.

Now that you have created a new character you should start the game with them. If you wake up on your ship you should go back to step one and make sure you did both A and B. On the other hand if you wake up in the Protectorate Academy you have been succesful.



Anyways, get out of bed and walk by your locker. If you are against the Protectorate than you probably don't want their uniform, but in any case you should grab the pixels.



Keep going on until you are at the cutscene where the people die.

After the cutscene plays through you will be left looking at the Matter Manipulator.



DON'T PICK IT UP

If you already picked it up you have really screwed yourself because now you need to start all the way back at step one. Delete the character and erase any evidence of the mess up.

If you didn't pick it up, good. Now walk by it and on to the next step.

Since you made it to this step I will assume you didn't get the matter manipulator, or that you are skipping steps. When you get to the first cave-in you should press the / key and type in the word admin. It should look like this.



If you are already familiar with admin mode than you can probably guess where I am going with this.
Press enter once you've typed that in and it should say,

<server> admin privileges now given to player (Your Name)

If you get this you have done it right. Next type in this,

/spawnitem energypickaxe



Make sure your cursor is hovering over you before you press enter or else the enrgy pickaxe will spawn wherever your cursor is.

Once you have it in your inventory you should destroy all the blocks.



and go through the rest of the mission as normal.

Once you get to your ship and leave the protectorate the universe is yours to explore without the burden of the matter manipulator or the protectorate. Sure the old lady will still try and pressure you into doing missions for her, but until someone makes a mod to kill her we're out of luck.

- Also as a sidenote this is a great oppurtunity to become a cultist and kill all the npcs you find.

Anyways, now you know how to become almost useless to others in Starbound.
