Will give full assessment after I start his campaign, but he seems to be a pure combat monster. Set him to take key target's heads and let him more or less autopilot and you should be fine.

I don't play on legendary, just on Very Hard. It took me 4+ campaign re-starts for both Maz and Kroq-Gar to figure out the best way to expand for each of them. I think that is incredibly important to being successful with them.
The Maz campaign is a little easier, because you can get a higher income earlier, letting you field that 2nd army. Kroq Gar is easier to figure out how to spend his points on leveling (Blue line to get lightning strike and quarter master and other upkeep reductions, Grymloq!).
I still don't know what is a really good way to upgrade Maz, his spells seem fairly underwhelming to be honest. A simple skink priest seems to have more impact.
