Pick-pocketing guide
By Isaac_
Some people don't seem to understand how stealing works in D:OS2. I am here to explain it:

1) have one thief and make sure he is not as a part of a party when you steal (he is NOT chained so as to move together with others)
This is what trips you up - all npcs will notice that they have been pick-pocketed. The npc will turn to your party and if you are all "chained" together the "let me check your bags" will be trigered on all of your party.
To avoid this the thief goes alone and as soon as he is done have him run away a small distance, meanwhile let your other party members to be searched - since they are clean nothing will happen. Search only happenes once so you won't be asked again afterwards. Thief can even go and trade with the npc again (not the stolen items tho...)

2) To make it easy have one or more people from your party talk to the npc so they don't walk around and don't change thei sight lines. This makes sneaking easier and pick-pocketing also as you have more time to see all of the items avaliable.

3) If your party members have equiped stolen items, doesn't matter who searches you, they will see that you have been up to no good. In this case they can almost always be bribed for a small amout (100-200) since they don't care so much for other peoples items.

4) enjoy the easy money, legendary loot from traders in driftwood.

I would add that gear quality and variety all increase with level so knowing when to rob them blind and when it might best serve to wait can really be worth it. Never steal gold, and always always always (strategically) kill any and all merchants before you are about to leave an area for good, also not well known is that before you kill a merchant try to steal and purchase as much of their inventory as you can before hand that way their corpse will contain all the gold they had when they died as part of the few items that will be lootable from their body which is limited to 7 max. gold counting as one of them. By stealing the best stuff, buying the cheap crap and buying the rest before you kill them will ensure that you get all they have in addition to their gold and the gold you gave them thinning their inventory.

Every place you visit this should be done, that qualifies to literally every area before the very last city. You can do so with almost zero problems story wise later in the game. To be safe, you might want to avoid killing any vendor that has quests attached to it as a general rule of thumb. ALSO in the last city the chapel area has several pilgrims with some truly amazing unique quality items. but aggro one and literally everyone in the entire area will attack you. There are ways to mitigate parts of that, one is to watch npc movement patterns and have unchained party members talk to them so that they are facing away from the person you are going to steal from, but truth be told I don't think all of them can be had with out just accepting that you going to have to kill every mother fucker in that whole place to get them all.

I did it fairly easily with a little strategic positioning, using door ways and indestructible environment features and teleport positioning to set up some INSANE lazer rays multi kills. Also side note. I would recommend the gift bag with Sourcerous sundries. Rob each of the merchants in all the acts in which they appear with all party members and KEEP the better unique and higher quality items you get early on and wait to boos them to lvl in Arkz. It's amazing how good some of the gear you get in Fort Joy and the nameless Isle are after they are boosted. ( killing the Ice Dragon and boosting the the sword you get from him makes it easily one of the best battle mage weapons hands down. OH and for the love of god SAVE THE GENIE TIL THE END. YOU get in the 2nd proper area and DO NOT USE IT TIL THE END. JUST DON"T.

Easy way to get a trader out of an area is to talk to them with one character and use teleport on your own character and the trader will run over to yell at you about teleporting away

That's where you talk to them again and hold them away from everyone else and rob them blind

Tips: in Driftwood it's hard to sneak up on traders since they stand in a crowded square, you can use nether swap to swap the trader to some safe area while keeping one of your team talking to them, this won't trigger aggro, becasue you just lose a bit attitude (-5) toward the people who sees you nether swap the trader. Do not use Teleportation as it will trigger the fight. Make sure all the rest of your member Civil Abilities points are respec into Thievery, now you can rob the trader clean by doing triple pickpocketing. Remember that once a member pickpocketed someone, he/she won't be able to pickpocket that poor guy again so switch to other member.
Using this trick is better than having 3 of your party to do misdirection on people around the trader (including the trader himself) as you can rob triple time and safer & quicker when you need to bail out,

Some extra things

Merchant money is based on your level, at lvl 16? they have around 22k each

Stealing is once per character so you can always go back to the boat and respec a your next character and steal again

Any stackable item you steal can have its "Stolen" tag removed by combining it with a non stolen same item

Stole 1 mill gold from driftwood before i left

Also forgot to mention that stealing money is somehow never detected. You may already need some in your inventory - not sure - but they can't tell its 'their' money vs 'your' money.

Using skillbooks quickly before you stop distracting the NPC makes them unable to detect that you 'stole' your skills.

I tend to steal skillbooks rather than every little thing, so any I can't learn immediately I put in a backpack. Before I stop distracting/reveal myself, I drop the backpack on the ground. Then you can let the NPC check your inventory, not see anything stolen, and simply pick up your backpack again (not stealing) with all your goodies inside.
