Distinguished Service Cross - Silver Star (General concepts)
By BlackSmoke 🏴‍☠
- Build Firebase next to the left edge of the map.
- Build several Forward Bases (4 enough) from HQ to Firebase to make a support chain (to be used by your helicopters and mechanized/tanks) separated no more than 10 hexes.
- Deploy in HQ, in Firebase and at least in a Forward Base 1 engineer to repair helicopters and vehicles. Don't move them and don't clear mines. Only to be used to repair and to refuel.
- Also deploy at least 1 infantry in every base to defend.
- Try to decrease H&M as fast as possible and stay in the range 35-38(39).
- To decrease H&M faster let your units (Hueys/Chinooks) and vehicles (mechanized/tanks) to be damaged with only 1 damage --> Then repair them. (If necessary sacrifice 2 of the Hueys)
- Never clean mines.
- Try to avoid kill enemies if H&M over 40.
- Don't kill enemy bases if not over 4-6 and depending on your political power and forces.
- Use Hueys and Chinooks to scout the map carefully, don't move great distance only hex by hex. This scout method will make Vietcong and NVA to shoot at them, good for you to decrease H&M. Don't let the helicopters to be destroyed, once taken first hit return to base.
- Use mechanized and tanks also as scouts to receive 1 hit and lower H&M, returning to base when damaged.
- If you don't find enemies, use the enemy bases to let them to shot your helicopters and vehicles. By flying or moving close to enemy bases they will shot to your units.
- Use Cobras to clean targets, also to scout empty hexes suspected to have enemy troops.
- Buy 2 green berets and deploy them as far as posible near to left edge of map after finishing recruting ARVN.
- Use the green berets to recruit ARVN infantry always. Get ARVN maxed.
- Don't enter villages except for the final 4-5 turns and don't gather any inteligence.

Force distribution (an example mid-game):
- 3 Engineer
- 2 Green Beret
- 3-4 Cobras
- 3 Huey
- 2 Chinook
- 2 Tank
- 2 Mechanized
- 3 Infantry
- 8 ARVN infantry
- 2 Artillery

Basic concepts:
- Hueys, Chinooks, mechanizeds and tanks must be taking damage constantly to decrease H&M and to compensate your enemy kills increasing H&M. Try to take 1 damage and repair constantly.
- Engineers only must be repairing and refueling.
- Green berets must be only recruiting all ARVNs (2 ARVN per Forward Base) in the first stages of game, in the later game scouting.
- To kill use mainly Cobras and artillery.

Just to help:

- I didn't train any ARVN. My berets were MUCH more valuable spread out and scouting the left side of the map.
- Use Cobras/Artillery for kills. Don't bother with ground units, unless you're out of firepower.

Restarted until I had a map with somewhat less jungle on the left side, around my firebase location.
Firebase was located just within 2 turns of Huey range. Measure your range, then look for a firebase spot at the edge of it. This allows you to refill Artillery, and ship wounded troops back and forth quickly.
Initial loadout was a Beret, a Cobra, and 2 infantry sent to starve (lower H&M quickly).
Send the engineer out to build your base, airlift the berets and 1 infantry to the area, to secure it.
1 turn before your base arrives, airlift the artillery to the firebase. Berets spread out and scout.
Repeat and add equipment when possible, to balance scouting vs firepower.

I've finally won the silver star and this guide was quite helpful  Here are some more tips:
- Life is a lot easier if you generate and save a map that has a road running across and clear space near the main base and where you want to put your firebase. You can't afford to waste time clearing jungle.
- My starting build was an extra Green Beret, an M113 and a tank. The 2 GBs train together to crank out 4 ARVN very fast before scouting while all the rest goes to fortify the firebase
- Once you're at the firebase, avoid as much combat as possible until the H&M is well under 40. Don't even ambush passing units, this will slow H&M drop!
- For the silver star, you actually want to help one faction! Let the VC do their thing and they will keep your score low while you are battling the NVA. Only attack them if you are desperate for cash or to gain XP on your ARVN.

You might want to add an explicit disclaimer that this is a guide for getting an achievement, and is not a guide for normal gameplay strategy. I'm just about to start my first game, and I didn't pick up on it until I noticed the bit about deliberately lowering H&M.
