A ton of fun that brings a Verhoven sized smile to my face. Network issues caused by lag spikes and disconnects mid-mission can be frustrating but an amazing experience otherwise.

Updating my review as of May 5th, 2024. Unfortunately Arrowhead has contractual obligations to Sony who rolled out a retroactive mandate to the Terms of Service going forward that now requires creating and linking a PSN account in order to access the game post May. Sony then went into their ToS on May 3rd and changed it from being optional to have a PSN account linked to some games may require a PSN account linked, no notice to the public.

There is plenty of coverage and conversation on this topic online, so I'll leave it at this - a great game is getting screwed harder than the unfortunate soul that was attractive during a viking raid. Over 60 countries have now been removed from listing the game - including the players from said countries with hundreds of hours logged. This is deceitful business practice on the part of Sony and I hope to see a class action lawsuit come of this.

Arrowhead I'm sorry to see you get caught in the middle, but next time mind who you get into bed with, there is a reason people don't swim with sharks. Might check to see if a refund is possible - all signs are pointing to a game with half a player base vanishing overnight and a broken trust going forward. I'm not sure how I feel about being a part of that...

There is some inherent, serious grind to get into the groove of things. If you can push past it the tech trees open up as do mission types and it get's pretty involved trying to manage all your systems while getting objectives done. The addition of being able to have a fully open world survival mode is a nice touch but you are strongly encouraged to complete missions first to have some of the basic things unlocked to make your experience less tedious up front.

The dev team is fantastic and has kept up an almost weekly cadence of updates for over a year now. I bought this back when it first went into early access and to see the changes to where it is now, with active community engagement is a great thing to see in the modern gaming landscape.

If you enjoy things like 7 Days to Die, extraction mission oriented games, the Forest (man vs nature aspect) then it'll be to your taste. There is a background lore and 'story' as you complete missions etc. however there isn't a narrative in this one like some other survival games. This is one where you are a headstrong prospector looking to make money doing drops no one else will, and survive. If you enjoy the PvE aspect and don't mind a grind it's a great value. Just check PC specs, it can be intensive on lower end machines.

First I tamed a little pig. It had sleek brown locks befitting of the legend, so I named him Nic Cage. Little did I realize little Nic would soon grow and before I knew it I was riding Nic Cage everywhere I needed to. Next to my cadre was the most adorable ibex so of course Idris Elba was next to join the flock. I now have Wanda Sykes my personal mammoth and Steve Buscemi my little ostrich.

Aside from my growing collection of friends, this is a great farming sim, very similar in concept to something like Stardew, but unlike Stardew you are oftentimes inventing, with help from your clan, many of the things you can craft. This puts a nice spin on it that also ties into gradually taming the wilderness to domesticate it and working as a community etc.

Leaves me with a smile on my face every time I play, just noticing new little features for the first time or appreciating a QOL that I hadn't noticed before that isn't in alot of other sims. A very satisfying and rewarding progression that doesn't really stagnate so far. I've seen mentions of a ~40hr playtime to progress through most of the content, but after putting in around 6 or 7 hours so far I gotta say that feels waaaaay below the mark. I'd guess that there is easily 100 hours of content already in this game. Will update later on.

A surprisingly deep and non-forgiving sandbox survival in the same vein as Necesse, Keplerth, or Core Keeper with its own spin being that you are a dark minion trying to make your own little claim in the world. Crafting and progression in very in depth but does not hold the player's hand and it is upfront about it point. As a side note, huge world gen really is huge. Bosses, vehicles, animal taming, farming, base building, exploration and mining. It has a bit of everything in a very zen vibe. Highly recommend for the price and for a solo developer I hope they continue to give it love if there are any future inspirations that strike them :)

Will update as I get deeper in...

Early Access Review
Great little mix of Stardew Valley/Terarria aesthetics and combat plus valheim-esque progression and near limitless customization of your base down to the types of floor materials per tile. The game currently has 5 bosses and it's first seasonal event and soon another biome with new mechanics and items and another boss. The map seems to become endless after a certain point so for $10 it really is a steal and a great chill game with some challenge here and there.

Here to update after putting in 133 hours. Ya it's good. They redid the winter event from last year and added in a new rotating seasonal merchant, new crafting bench, new collectibles, the first 'minions', and new decor. This team gives so much attention to detail in even their smallest updates. The fact that at least another large biome update is coming with more vehicles and mechanics and bosses, really can't recommend it enough.

Decided to update this about a year later. It's honestly a crime this game doesn't have Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam yet for the amount of content, passion, and honestly unexpected beauty in the pixel art style this dev team has managed. They just released the 2023 roadmap and it really shows just how much this team care about this little game that started off fairly contained and has now continued to blossom over the months into something so much more than it was at the beginning. Do yourself a favor and just buy it, you won't regret it.

One of the most cerebral and immersive survival/exploration games I've ever had the joy of experiencing. It has its technical glitches which even the devs want to address at some point in the future now that Below Zero is done but other than pop-in textures at a distance and some minor bugs there is nothing game breaking.

I already went through this game once on Xbox for the first time and immediately bought it on steam to experience it with mods after nearly 100 hours on Xbox. If that level of time sink is what you are looking for with a gorgeous world and decent story then hop on in.

Slappy happy chase sequence was worth the $5 admission ticket alone. Polish on the rest was chef kiss. Would cream pants in scarousal again.
