A lot of potential but flawed execution

This is the first time I truly regret buying a game. Before you waste your money on this one, let me tell you more about this title. It pains me a bit to say this but Don't Knock Twice is a boring and monotonous game filled with cheap jump scares, nothing more. The main problem here is that playing this was like waiting for a spooky moment that never came, which left me quite disappointed.

I really don't enjoy giving negative feedback but there are some other weaknesses in this game I can't keep to myself. I usually don't mind reading to find out some clues but this game was solely built around notes and other collectibles, from which we can finally get to one of the most frustrating things in Don't Knock Twice; that is to say, the achievements whereof you can unlock majority during your first playthrough. It was so annoying when the tiny window popped up in the right corner of the screen every five seconds. Also, the fear factor was weak, and unfortunately, the execution of the game is flat. It's sad because the idea in general had a lot of potential.

On top of that, the price is too high for a game this short. Grab it on sale if you are new to the genre and want a tame horror experience - but this is not for hardcore horror fans. I played it normally but it's probably better in VR.

"Every decision matters, even the smallest and most trivial ones"

In a nutshell, the best narrative game if you consider all the aspects. With a very intriguing, touching story and lovable multi-dimensional characters, Detroit: Become Human will take you to a diverging path in which you have to decide which direction to go. Every choice matters. Every choice has consequences, even the smallest and most trivial ones. This game outclasses many others with a similar setting or gameplay since there are so many possible outcomes (around 40) enhancing its replayability.

Plot

Detroit: Become Human is a story about future where humans live side by side with androids, machines developed to serve them in different tasks. They are not seen as anything else than pieces of plastic. Those who rebel against their masters are called deviants - androids that consider themselves living beings.

The main trio is well-constructed and though-out: Connor, a detective android investigating crimes committed by deviants, Kara, a deviant who wants to be a mother, and Markus, another deviant in pursuit of changing the world for the better. They encounter great dangers along the way, and it's up to you to decide how their story ends. Will the androids be able to live in freedom and be equal with their creators? Or are they all going to die?

In the beginning, I knew nothing about this game, and little by little, it sucked me in. It's a heart-warming masterpiece that will make you laugh until your belly hurts, scream both in panic and anger, and cry your eyes out. Definitely a sign of a good story.

Gameplay

The game feels more like an interactive movie whose storyline is affected by the dialogue choices of the player, characters' relationship development, the paths unlocked, and the success in quick time events resulting in certain outcomes. All of this is presented in the Flowchart at the end of each chapter. Unlike it may seem, the game isn't that slow-paced since it can pump your adrenaline even to the point of hyperventilating (if you decide not to undo the past if you screw up and care about the characters).

There are two difficulty levels in the game: casual that lets you focus on the story and is forgiving or experienced that offers more challenge (like one mistake and you're dead). I suggest you start with the easier level at first.

As a newcomer to this kind of gaming culture, controls feel a bit sloppy to me and I still haven't got used to them. The character bumps into walls and objects even though I press the right buttons, and the camera moves around weirdly.

This game mostly consists of cutscenes so the player has fairly little control over the character compared to other games. And sometimes, the options given are rather ambiguous, which can increase the risk of making the wrong choice. These are not big problems, though.

Verdict

I give credit to the company for doing such a great job on this one, they deserve every single dollar. What a shame I bought this on sale! This one gave me a lot of food for thought and I wondered if the choices I made tell something about me as a human being. So please, give this one a try. You won't regret it.

I like the way this DLC connects with the original story but it's still lacking content and effectiveness of the base game. You can grab it if you enjoyed playing Layers of Fear and want more of it, this does a fine job offering you more, especially because the price isn't too high. But in my opinion, this DLC is quite average.

Not as good as the base game but still satisfying for demanding taste. Talking about the plot and graphics, Outlast: Whistleblower feels a bit too rushed in comparison with its predecessor, but it's up to you to decide if it matters or not. Either way, I like the fact that it's similar to the first game so if you liked it, there's a strong probability that this one will meet your expectations. Oh, and a warning: get ready to meet one of the most disturbing and insane enemies in the series...

One of the most atmospheric horror games to date

Layers of fear was much better than it seemed at first. It's an exemplification of what psychological horror that messes with your mind instead of filling you with pure terror could be. The atmosphere was one of the best parts in the game since you could sense the ominous undertone that was lying under it the whole time, and the beautiful yet sorrowful background music was playing a big role in creating that feeling.

Overall, the game itself wasn't very scary and became a bit boring toward the end but I think it was rather supposed to be strange and creepy than unsettling. There's no hiding or running away from monsters, just you, the house, and the ghosts of your mind. It was a mind-blowing and unique experience that won't be easily forgotten - despite all the clichés,

Layers of fear manages to provide something new to this genre and is worth trying if you're into slow-build-up games that focus more on the narration and exploration. It's a disturbing story of a painter and his struggles with insanity which Bloober Team interprets in an impressive way. But be prepared - the game will scare the player in very clever and unexpected ways. It makes the player question everything they see and hear - plus, jump scares galore so beware!

Dr. Trager's shock therapy

Before buying this game, I had been watching videos on Youtube which kind of spoiled the plot and everything. It tells something about this game since Outlast managed to scare me either way; though, it should be noted that this is the first horror game I've ever played so I have no point of reference of any kind. This genuinely terrifying creation was beyond good and definitely met my expectations - it's hard to imagine any other game as efficient and intense as this was.

Contrary to what I had thought, the controls were surprisingly smooth and graphics well-honed for a game this old. I'm not the most passionate gamer in the world but I would recommend this to any horror junkie. Outlast is an undying classic, an absolute masterpiece with iconic characters and an unforgettable survival horror experience. The only weak spot is that it becomes a bit predictable after a while but it doesn't take away the tension completely.

Explore the horrors of the asylum through your night vision camera and be ready to scream! You'll have to utilize stealth, react quickly, and also try to think through the fog of panic, sometimes following your instinct. The merit is that it doesn't solely rely on jump scares (even though I have heard many complaints) but it also builds tension and raises vigilance among players whenever encountering something alarming - then you'll just have to make a decision whether to hide, run, or die. After this shock therapy, I felt a bit desensitized for a while when playing other horror games.
