Relaxing experience; creepy, with a unique take on horror. It had a couple moments of surprise that were like "soft" jump scares, which was fun.
I've never played any backrooms games because I haven't been interested, but I think this one is great.
Aesthetically, it is cohesive - though the VHS tape element seems like a stretch. I appreciate the lack of melodic music, favoring supposed diegetic ambient sound and foley.
I could maybe even see myself booting it up in the future and taking a little walk just to chill, though that isn't likely.

*Do you think Freud would have a really fun time analyzing this game?*

Damn, I suck at shmups! But let me tell you, if you're going to choose any shmup to start with, this would be the one. It has a really helpful tutorial that pretty much sets the tone for how to progress and get better at the game. The progression of which creates something that would normally only be an hour or two of content, into a 15+ hour experience.
It's this simple value that AAA studios just don't understand. Angel at Dusk laughs in the face of hyper-realistic graphics and dumbed-down difficulty, with what appear to be vector images of sexualized eldritch crab people barraging the player with bone covered hot-dogs, as midi-programmed thrash metal drives the pulse of our "angel" as she tries to maneuver and shield against the hot dogs and flim-flams targeted her way.
It's got the challenge of an arcade that keeps a person improving upon play, and the awesome visual aesthetic that charms one's finer emotional brain. Hell, it's even got story line for all you weirdos who have to have lore for every single thing.
What more could you ask for in a perfect video game?

I highly recommend giving this game a try even if you've never played shmups or you're an average skill player. If not for the fun of the game play, you may enjoy the art or the music.

Not the most sophisticated story or game play, but hey, it's free. It's short (took me under 20 minutes).
The shining thing ABEL has to offer is some pretty visuals and some very very good sound design.

Game nails the aesthetic. Wasn't a super fun play, but it made me think the dev has tons of potential. I wouldn't pay full price, if you can help it.

IF you are someone who is interested in consciousness and technology, you should absolutely play it. There is no need of jump scares (though there are jump scares in the game) because the implications of existentialism and reality are already horrifying. The atmosphere and story are so beautifully done that the gameplay loop is based completely on "what will happen next?"
I wish that I knew a bit more philosophy so I could give an even more in depth *super smart and condescending* review about how it really hits the nail on the head. But I can only say that the game gave me some existential horror and a lot of dopamine.

As a side note: I hope SOMA doesn't haunt or influence people the way it creeps into my paranoid mind. I'd like to believe that the truth of consciousness is much more complicated than what the game presents. I think that entertaining these curiosities is getting humanity into the mess of AI, which I am skeptical has anything really to do with actual consciousness or intelligence.
But these questions are fun if not scary, and that's what makes SOMA such an entertaining experience.

I feel kind of torn right now.

I haven't even played very much of this, but so far I'm not fully liking it and here's why:

The style and environment of each game is amazing. The music is very good, even when it's not necessarily something I'd listen to. Some of the writing is pretty funny or thought provoking.
But then to have a random real "celebrity" in the middle of a dream-like scenario, it starts to take me out of it. I start to overthink it like "is this just a music video in a game? am I ok with that? Is this what 'the youths' play now adays? am I just getting old and losing my weird edge?"

Then I remember that even Lynch brings in celebrities to his dream world and does shameless promotion... but do I enjoy that? I'm not really sure. I can't decide, honestly.

Anyway, that's all a lot to say about not having played very much of it. But that's what's been the most striking about the game so far, and I don't think that makes it recommendable in my book.

But I'm not going to knock it yet, and I may update my review if I ever decide to keep playing it.

I'll just recommend for now based on what I've played.

I really enjoyed it, mainly as an aesthetic experience.
I appreciated the content of some of the exhibits more than others, but when it did reach a philosophical point I liked, it made a great impression.
It gave me an extremely nostalgic personal feeling that reminded me of the first time I ever played a computer game when I was like 7 or something.
One thing I was on the fence about was the interface and text. On the one hand I think it lent to the experience of being on an old DOS computer with controls that are just "like that", but on the other hand - I'm so impatient and overwhelmed with attention sucking events daily that, in all honesty, it was the most challenging part of the game.
But again, because of nostalgia I did my best to remain patient.
I think just based on style and environment, and the way it made me feel, I can confidently recommend giving it a try.

Put off buying this game for a while, but just got it on sale. It was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I loved the style and atmosphere of the art, sound and music. I thought the puzzles were fun and challenging. It was relatively short, I played the whole thing in under 4 hours. Perfect game as far as I can tell.

Strange. But a genuine work of art and I think 100% worth the money, even if it isn't necessarily a "video game", as such. More of an interactive art piece.
