This is one of the best games of all time. I don't think any game can re-create the overwhelming sense of freedom that Subnautica presents to the player while still having a engaging story that doesn't feel like a chore to complete. Most open world games feel like a chore. The to complete the "story" in most games, you have to get Mr.Bob 18,135 pine cones and then use them to craft a jet that travels at light speed. Why? I don't know, Mr.Bob just wants a jet made of pine cones. In most games, "open world" and "exploration" just means that it is 70% empty fields that immediately become boring as soon as you see them. But wait! You didn't find the secret hidden ULTRA pine cone that gives you a 2% heath boost. Subnautica is fun. The story feels FUN. You dont have to collect random items for hours on end, you just EXPLORE the world! You progress by exploring. And it NEVER gets boring! And each time you explore the same place, you can find something new. A cave entrance that leads to a cool voice log that explains the history, or a rare egg that you can hatch to be you're pet. Or sometimes, its just a really cool fish that you have never seen before. (or worst case scenario, a HUGE fish that wants to EAT you) Heck, you dont even have to follow the story. Do you want to collect the rarest creatures? go for it. Do you want to build a base that goes across half of the map? sure. Do you just want to explore and find EVER beautiful thing and secret that the world has to offer? go for it. Want to be CONSUMED BY THE NEVER-ENDING HORRORS THAT IS THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN THAT IS HOME TO CREATURES THAT CAN KILL YOU?!?!?! Ok, sure! And the best part, Cuddlefish. Trust me.
