Ah so I finally rewatched this today and I have a few thoughts.

This movie is incredibly safe. It doesn’t try anything too wild and it doesn’t have many incredible moments. It’s consistently good (nothing more nothing less) throughout the entire movie. Which is kinda good I guess. However even though I said it is consistent it does have its downsides.

A major problem I have with this film is the final fight scene. It was going well. Kylo easily defeated Finn which should be expected as he had hardly wielded a lightsaber before then. Now one of the great moments happens but I’ll talk about that later. The fight with Rey starts out great. Rey is losing and that is to be expected. She has had no training and refused to even touch the lightsaber before hand. She granted did have experience with her staff though it is a different weapon it still transfers a bit. Now here’s where the issue kicks in. I think Rey should of lost this fight. This would be great to show the gap between Kylo and her and star a rivalry. Luke wouldn’t have been able to even touch Vader however all of a sudden Rey does. Now it is implied she starts using the force here but it isn’t fully obvious what exactly she does but it ends up with her winning the fight. They probably though “oh yeah this makes Rey look really strong” however I think it makes Kylo look weak. This is incredibly inconsistent with Kylo as literally everybody is afraid of him and he manages to stop Rey moving completely earlier in the film. Kylo was injured slightly but they were minor injuries as he could still move perfectly fine. I’m not calling Rey a Mary Sue just yet however she does have traits of one. I think this fight should of ended with Rey beaten on the floor maybe with a minor injury and then the ground splits. Kylo can be driven by her getting away instead of being beaten making him a larger threat. Kylo seems weak which makes no sense. I think this was just a case of good always wins.

So what saves this film except it being good most of the time? Specific moments. Two in particular. Han Solo’s death was genuinely heart breaking and I remember the first time I saw that I cried. A child hood hero slaughtered by his own son. That was an incredibly emotional moment followed by Chewie’s emotional response. Probably my favourite part of the movie. Another is Luke at the end. The chills that scene produces is insane. It was the perfect hook for the next film. I think it’s safe to say everyone got excited at this.

Comedy falls a little flat in this film. I think I laughed once and smiled a couple times. When Finn says we will use the force I laughed then (at Han’s response) and then there were a couple smile invoking moments such as C-3PO butting in on Han and Leia.

This film is not bad by any means it’s good but nothing more. Unfortunately this movie is capped at a 4 star rating for me but is ultimately brought down slightly for some issues I have with the film. However the good moments balance a little so I think a fairer rating would be 3.8/5 stars so I’ll round it to 4. This film is still good and very enjoyable. There is nothing awful about this movie only minor issues. I still love this movie but I can’t judge the whole movie on a few scenes.
