Anyways, my point is this: to criticize Walter Jr. here is to miss the point, which is that Walt letting go of his pride on this one occasion would ultimately lead him to extending his lifespan with chemotherapy, but his inability to abandon his pride in every other subsequent decision he made is what led him to this destroy his family.

Also, suggesting to slap a child under any circumstances is child abuse and I recommend you don't perpetuate that kind of behavior.

Should Walter have denied the treatment? I suppose he would never have gone on to ruin his family's life if he had. However, if Walter had fully let go of his pride, he could have had a better outcome for himself and his family. If he had just accepted the job from Elliot, then perhaps he could have reestablished a presence in the business he helped establish, rekindled his friendship with his former friend, paid for his cancer treatment, acquired a higher and LEGAL salary at Gray Matter Technology, and died maybe a few years later with the respect of his family. Plus, without Walter pulling him back in, Jesse may have gotten scared from his onetime encounter with Walter and subsequent conflict with Badger and gave up on cooking meth. He could have gotten clean, or he could have just kept trying without Walt's help and probably end up dead or arrested. It's hard to say which.

Of course, Walter doesn't even really respond until he is cornered by his entire family. We hear Walter express his desire to die without suffering the constant pain from treatment, but I think it's apparent that beneath the justifications to his family, he felt more like he lacked a purpose to live. He said it himself: "Sometimes I feel like I never actually make any of my own choices. I mean, my entire life it just seems I never had a real say about any of it." The lack of control that Walter already felt over his own life, his guilt over his brief encounter with the illegal drug market and subsequent murder of Krazy 8, and his fear of losing the last bit of control over his own life he had before he dies all made him ready to resign to his fate. However, when he realized that the price for that control would be estrangement from his family in the time he had left, he gave in and decided to go through with the treatment.
