This morning, we heard a dull and regular noise that came from no man's land. We thought it was the enemy artillery that was preparing to fire, but we did not see any projectiles whistling over our heads. We looked through the loopholes of our trenches, and we saw strange shapes that moved slowly towards us. They looked like iron boxes mounted on tracks, with cannons and machine guns that came out of all sides. We had never seen such war machines. We thought they were monsters sent by the devil to annihilate us.

We opened fire with our rifles and machine guns, but the bullets bounced off the armor of the tanks without stopping them. Some were hit by our shells or were blocked by obstacles, but others continued their inexorable progress. They crossed our barbed wire as if nothing had happened, and reached our lines. They fired on our positions with incredible violence, wreaking havoc among our comrades. Some tried to flee, but they were mowed down by the machine guns. Others tried to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat, but they were crushed under the tracks or pierced by the bayonets of the English infantrymen who followed the tanks.

I was lucky enough to survive this massacre, by hiding in a shell hole. I saw a tank pass a few meters from me. It was painted brown and bore the number 705. It had a red cross on the side, which meant it was carrying wounded. It was escorted by two English soldiers who looked at me with contempt. I felt powerless and humiliated. I wondered how we could resist this new weapon that seemed invincible. I wondered if the war was lost for us...
