FISH FACTS!!!!

Fact 1: Did you know that there are 370 species of fish that can breathe air? This includes some species of Aquarium Fish. These kinds of Fish are called Facultative Air Breathers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀   


Fact 2: Dwarf Pigmy Gobies are some of the smallest fish around! Adults weight 4 milligrams and are only 6/10ths of an inch long. It can be found in the ocean near the Philippines.

Fact 3: Sturgeon Caviar used to be considered a food so fowl it was only fit for prisoners to eat. Now it is considered a delicacy. This has caused many types of sturgeon to dwindle in population now that the demand for sturgeon is so high.

Fact 4: Catfish can be found on all continents except Antarctica. They will eat almost anything they consider food. They have been responsible for many attacks in places like South East Asia as the Mekong Catfish (A Huge Catfish Native to South East Asia) will mistake people for food and drag them under water.

Fact 5: There are 13 species of Black Bass, which are generally, the bass found in North America. Sometimes they are mistaken as trout.

Fact 6: Alligator gar are a fish species native to the Mississippi river and its tributaries. The technique used by anglers to catch these fish is to just try to snag them with the hook, because their teeth are so sharp they will cut through any fishing line.

Fact 7: Sockeye salmon is nicknamed the Blueback Salmon. This is in spite of the fact that their bodies are a distinct bright red color.



Fact 8: Mako Sharks are the fastest species of shark. They can swim at speeds of 20 miles per hour! They can be very scary, but are generally not hostile toward humans.



Fact 9: Piranhas are actually not directly hostile toward humans. Piranha attacks on humans are very uncommon, and generally only occur because the piranha is very desperate for food.



Fact 10: Aquarium gold fish are usually heavily inbred. This causes the fish to look plump and usually have health issues. Usually the fish need special attention from their owners to ensure their health.



Fact 11: Fish feel slimy because they have a layer of mucus on their skin that helps them fend off disease. When handling fish be careful not to rub off this mucus layer as it can endanger the fish's health.



Fact 12: Gold fish and Koi are both descendants of a type of Carp. They were originally domesticated in China.



Fact 13: The "Asian Carp" an invasive species of Carp in the Mississippi river is actually 4 different species of carp. They include Bighead Carp, Black Carp, Grass Carp, and Silver Carp.



Fact 14: There are 193 species of pufferfish. Some can reach over 20in in size!.



Fact 15: Rainbow trout, also known as Steelhead, are native to the Colombia river in the Pacific North West, but have been introduced to ecosystems like the Great Lakes.



Fact 16: The Coelacanth (A bony deep ocean fish) was once thought to have gone extinct 66 million years ago, until one was caught on rod and reel in December of 1938. Since then we have found 83 more specimens as a species.



Fact 17: The first predatory animal was a fish from the Cambrian Era. One of the most common animals of the time was the Trilobite, which existed for 250 million years.



Fact 18: Crabs have evolved 5 separate times in history independently of each other. Henceforth: Crabs are the ultimate life form.



Fact 19: Sharks have existed for 420 (nice) million years. They are generally very docile around humans despite their reputation. When sharks attack humans, it is usually because the shark mistakes the human as a seal or other form of prey.



Fact 20: Many fish are electric. There are Rays, Eels, and Catfish who all can produce a shock with specialized organs they have. Sharks and many other fish use electricity to sense prey.



Fact 21: Stingrays do not have specialized glands for their venom like snakes and other venomous animals, but rather they store their venom within their own cells.



Fact 22: The beluga sturgeon is the largest fresh water fish alive. The largest one on record was 23 feet long and weighed over 3 thousand pounds. They are considered a critically endangered species and are under heavy conservation efforts.



Fact 23: Lamprey are parasitic fish native to the Atlantic, but can be found from the shores of the great lakes all the way to the black sea. They attach themselves to the side of a fish and suck their blood. They, evolutionarily, are just overgrown leeches.



Fact 24: There is an order of fish known as Chimaeras. They have existed for 400 million years They generally live at extreme ocean depths and look very creepy. They are also related to the shark with a buzz saw esque tooth spiral in its mouth.



Fact 25: The lure found on the front of an angler fish is a heavily modified dorsal fin.



Fact 26: The blackstripe herring is a herring that lives in the shallows of the pacific ocean near mexico. They generally eat plankton, crustaceans, and fish eggs.



Fact 27: Flatfish usually start with both their eyes on different sides of their heads, and as they grow, one of the eyes slowly moves to the other side.



Fact 28: Fish do not have bad memory, despite what most people think. If an Atlantic Cod is caught, it will hesitate to eat anything it is suspicious of for a year and a half after the event.



Fact 29: The world's largest eel is the European Conger, which can reach almost 10 feet long. It is native to the Mediterranean, Baltic, and Atlantic Ocean.



Fact 30: The skeletons of sharks are not made of bone, but rather cartilage. This means that we do not have any full body shark fossils because cartilage does not fossilize well.



Fact 31: Oarfish, not to be confused with paddlefish, are one of the inspirations for the sea serpent. One wash ashore on Bermuda beach in the mid 19th century, which caused many stories of the sea serpent to spread. The specimen was 16 feet long. Some unconfirmed reports say that Oarfish reach up to 56 feet long.



Fact 32: Paddlefish, not to be confused with Oarfish, are a dwindling family of fish native to North America and China. There used to be 6 species, but now 4 have become extinct. There is now only 1 species left in North America, and 1 left in China.



Fact 33: Synanceia horrida also known as the rough stone fish, is native to the Indo-Pacific region, and has a sting so painful those stung have begged to have limbs cut off. They only sting when stepped on as it makes their stinger extend involuntarily. Their venom is extremely painful.

Fact 34: Tiger sharks are on average longer than Great White sharks, but Great White sharks are generally heavier.



Fact 35: Out of the 10 largest fish species, 4 are sharks, 3 are ocean sunfish, 1 is a ray, 1 is a Mola, and 1 is a sturgeon. All but the sturgeon are salt water fish. The heaviest known fish is the Whale Shark, which has weighed in at 43,000+ pounds.



Fact 36: Amazonian Arapaima are a large omnivorous Amazonian river fish. We know there is more than 1 species of Arapaima, but the documents for all other types of Amazonian Arapaima were lost in a World War 2 bombing run.



Fact 37: Pirate Perch are a species of fresh water perch native to the Atlantic coast of the US. They are notable because their anus is almost directly under their eye, close to where a neck wound be.



Fact 38: Walleye, a version of pike used to be 2 different species, Blue and Yellow. Walleye in general are endemic to the USA and Canada. Blue walleye specifically are endemic to Quebec and Ontario. Blue walleye are now believed to be extinct, although it was found through DNA analysis of old specimens that Blue walleye were just Yellow walleye with genetic mutations making them Blue-ish in color.



Fact 39: Muskie are a species of Pike. They are considered especially hard to catch, being nicknamed "The fish of 10,000 Casts."



Fact 40: The crown-of-thorns starfish is a starfish with a bunch of venomous spines on it that make it look like a crown made of thorns. It is endemic to the Great Barrier Reef and the areas around it.



Fact 41: The yellow tang, a popular salt-water aquarium fish, are a reef fish common to the pacific ocean and are well known for their extremely bright yellow coloring.



Fact 42: Lungfish are a type of fish that can breathe air. They have both gills and lungs for breathing air. Both they and Coelacanths are the last remaining of the lobe-finned fish.



Fact 43: Deep sea fish, aka those found in the abyssal zones of the ocean, usually lack any pigment in their skin and are sometimes blind. This also applies to fish endemic to cave ecosystems.



Fact 44: Lantern fish are a deep sea fish that is so abundant in number that when scans for the deep ocean were first obtained the layer that they reside on was mistaken for the bottom of the ocean because radar waves reflect off of their swim bladders and act like a sea floor on radar.
