My name is Vito Scaletta. I was born in Sicily, in the year 25. This is our family. I'm standing with my parents and my sister Francesca. I don't remember much about those times, except that life was hard, and then my father decided it was time for us to leave. To cross the ocean and start a new life. I'd never seen anything like the Empire Bay in my life. It was beautiful. But it's hard to imagine anything more hideous and disgusting than our new doghouse. The American dream. More like a nightmare. Dad started working at the harbor for the man who brought us here. He worked his ass off, made a pittance and spent most of it in the joint. Eventually I was sent to school. I needed English, but there was no way I'd speak it with Italians. That's where I met Joe. Gradually we became best friends. Since we were both out of pocket and had no decent jobs, we started our own humble business. Well, we weren't so lucky then. It was the year 43. There was a war going on. Landing in Sicily, needed soldiers who spoke Italian. I was 18, and I didn't want to go to prison. Who says you can't go back to your homeland?
