TLDR, if you liked Remnant: From the Ashes. you'll most likely like this game. If you want a casual / difficult co-op souls-like shooter to play with friends, you'll like this game. Combat (for the most part) and gameplay as a whole are very good with worthwhile exploration and a good aesthetic. DO NOT EXPECT GOOD CHARACTER WRITING. 8.4/10 will play it again with the dlcs.

For context, I played through to the ending co-op on nightmare difficulty. I'm going to say mostly negative things in this review but I want to preface this with I did genuinely enjoy the game and believe their is more good than bad and by a large degree, but the bad stuff is pretty bad...

Co-op, Difficulty and Builds. This game has some of the most penalizing scaling I've ever seen. Google up the chart for scaling to see exact number but as an example on nightmare difficulty, non boss monsters have 2.5 times health but do 3.5 times damage, this basically makes all but armor builds very difficult and niche. I understand that this is the harder difficulty but this isn't even the hardest difficulty and its not a problem of me 'getting good', it just means that you are effectively exempt from using builds because you can be stunlocked into being killed from regular mobs. Weapons suffer from scaling as well, a weapon that would otherwise be viable is gated from being not leveled up. Resources in your first 2-ish play throughs will be scarce as you can only upgrade 1 weapon at a time and you don't have a good idea as to what weapons will be found throughout the game without looking them up. And to make leveling weapons even worse, the game scales with the highest level of your weapons and classes, meaning that if you find a weapon you are not only doing less damage because you haven't leveled the weapon up, but the enemies also scale with how strong the weapon you just stopped using. Bosses luckily don't have their damage scale as much as their health scales but that's because they have higher base damage, causing you to die from full health using the tankiest build possible at certain points in the game because of stagger. All of the damage you take and the way that upgrading weapons works punishes you for trying anything new and this trend continues with classes. Co-op seems to increase enemy health and damage, but I have been unable to find out the amount.

Classes and XP. When you pick a class, the game doesnt tell you that you get the weakest skill and have to spend up to 10 hours in game to unlock the third skill in the class, you dont get to pick what you want from the beginning and you have to just deal with having the weaker ability and less attribute points. Farther into the game you will find more classes and want to use them but have to go through the boring process of leveling it up which will require that you give up something like 10-40% of your weapon damage and use likely a less interesting ability so that you can unlock the one you actually want.

The writing. oh..my...god... Without using spoilers, I think a developer inserted their OC into the game and made them them the macguffin for the plot, and because its not a plot heavy game, that means that about half the story is just about this npc being magically important for basically no reason. The world has very good lore and some of the side characters that are "unimportant" are the more interesting characters. I would also argue that the established lore and story from the first game is effectively retconned into being mostly irrelevant which personally makes me angry at basically all of the writers for this game that had to do with the overarching story of Remnant 2. The writing is by far the worst part of the game by a big margin.

Combat. Remnant 2 has this problem where youre supposed to dodge animation windups and not attacks. When you see an enemy thats the size of a school bus, you would inherently thing that they have slow large attacks or ranged attacks, players will expect this without knowing they expect this, the enemies do not do this. if an enemy has a big sword and slams it on the ground, you would naturally think that you have to dodge the sword. In Remnant 2 the giant sword has no weight in animation, the windup is longer than the swing for arbitrary reasons, if you were to swing something, it is impossible for the swing to take less time then the windup, but not in remnant 2. If you look up a video of the final boss, the windup for their attack is 2-3 times as many frames as the actual swing, with the swing being roughly 100 milliseconds and the duration for I frames in your dodge is about 300-500 milliseconds, meaning that you dont dodge the attack, you dodge the windup animation. This seems like another "get good" situation but this does have negative impact on gameplay, with enemy design requiring you remember attack windups and dodging attacks by reaction becoming arbitrarily more difficult, you are effectively required to be hit by an enemy to learn how to evade them, meaning that its not actually a "skill issue", its more of a "remember this thing after you see it" issue.

Early Access Review
Took about 2.5 hours to finish the early access portion of the game. solid base mechanics, gameplay and especially good art style. would recommend for anyone who is a fan of dishonored style combat (without the magic). considering that the first demo was in 2020 and its near the end of 2022 im not sure that 20$ is worth but here's to hpoping.

This is my favorite VR game. I'm a big fan of single player games and very few come close to the strong sense of atmosphere in this game. Every time I thought I understood what the game had to offer, a new mechanic, enemy, or item would show me that in my 20 hour play through of the game, I had another thing to learn and adapt to. the sound design and world building both in text and in visuals are better than most AAA games ive played. Anyone who owns a VR headset needs this in their library.

Not everything is perfect.

The hunger system is pretty meaningless, although there are about 4 food items there is only 1 drink item. Hunger should probably have a thirst mechanic to go along with it and all food items in the game are canned goods and 1 chocolate bar. The hunger system for the most part doesn't add any difficulty to the game but adds some immersion, this may not be a bad thing but it seems lackluster at the moment.

Difficulty at default is probably a bit too high. Normal difficulty was manageable until i came across the Sliders. I was using an sks at the time and made the mistake of selling the first ak-74 i came across. these enemies were extremely difficult to kill at the time i came across them. with how few resources i had, i turned down the difficulty a lot to compensate. If i had stayed at normal difficulty I guessed that in a matter of 2-4 hours I would be caught in a loop of spending more money than i would gain from going out into the field to complete missions. The problem of difficulty might be because of me playing the game like a shooter rather than a stealth game but money is so hard to keep after repairs and regearing that im not sure I would have been able to get more than a silenced ak with no other attachments by the end of the game and also it would add another 4+ hours to the game without adding meaningful gameplay imo.

Unfinished areas. The Last area you go into before you 'beat' the game and go into freeplay is mostly unfinished. From the entrance to the last area the sky has an amazing aesthetic and the color grading change is perfect. Unfortunately after about 5 minutes, the map starts to show how unfinished it is. while the previous two priority missions have puzzles involving voice acting and new mechanics revolving around in game items. the last mission requires you to walk in a few dark corridors, then past a few dozens anomaly fields and kill a few dozen enemies. The parts between entering the area and the cutscene are lackluster and obviously meant as a placeholder but it still was disappointing because of how good the previous missions were. The last area also has some obvious missing textures and the polish of extra buildings/background props.

Guns and attachments. While all calibers in the game have at least 2 guns to go along with them, there is almost no such thing as too many options. side note it feels really bad to still be getting 9x18 ammo in the final areas of the game as I assume most players have moved past that caliber at that stage of the game. while there are 5 1x sights in the game, there are only 2 rail scopes and one of them starts at 7 times zoom. The game could probably use LPVO's in the game to bridge the game between the 1x sights and 4x scope (btw the 4x scope irl has more than 1 zoom). The grenade launcher only attaches to ak weapons which is disapointing for player options.

Enemy and AI. All the enemy archetypes are well thought out but there is a design problem with bots having ranged hit-scan weapons. Snipers have a fire-rate that is much too high considering their range and damage. Bots with full auto weapons have randomly too high of accuracy. The melee enemies are fun to fight because engagements to end up with you turning a corner to up to 5 soldiers crouch walking up to you with full auto guns, instantly killing you. Enemy AI is very dumb but very deadly, the worst of both worlds.

Overall I give this game a 8.4/10 would and will play it again
