A deeply tragic and heartbreaking but beautiful story; interesting and memorable characters - as well as a powerful and badass lead(with PHENOMENAL actors); a well-detailed world; a haunting soundtrack; well-researched and serious representation of mental illness; if any of these things are what you look for in games, consider giving Hellblade a chance! (A second one is in the works apparently...you should also check out the trailers for it :) )

Follow Senua through her dark trek into Hel to find the only thing she has left - her love, Dillion.
"They can break you but not your promise; even death won't keep you apart. Through this darkness you will find him, in your sword still beats a heart." - Hellblade

One of my favorite horror games to date. Its a visually stunning game, with great narrative, memorable characters, and a dread and anxiety-inducing atmosphere. Even after so many playthroughs I find myself really focusing when sneaking and hiding, and I still feel my heart in my throat while the Alien stalks around. And don't even get me started on the Working Joes (kill them while you can). At this point though its more thrilling than frightening, though i do still get the ♥♥♥♥ scared out of me every now and then. Its not a perfect game, though it wouldn't really be any fun if it was. It does have its occasional glitches and bugs, but rarely any game-breakers, usually just funny ones. I think its definitely worth the full price, but you could get it on sale too, either way its worth it!

One of my favorite horror games, amazingly and beautifully made. This also has one of the most DEPRESSING endings ever.

My only problem I had with it is that in the small areas it provides it can be really hard to run from the creatures. The good news about that though? Most of them can't see you anyway.

But they sure as hell can hear you.

By the way, the sounds used for the monsters gives you some serious eerie and terrifying feelings. Speaking of which, the dread and loneliness this game puts you through is insane. You can literally feel the loneliness and sense of not belonging through the character Simon. You really start to kind of understand how he feels, the writing and voice actors were so good at portraying the characters in this game.

Not sure if the game is nightmare-inducing, but it definitely can deliver an existential crisis, thinking on what it means to be human, and the crushing weight of knowing Simon's fate at the end of the game. That part always messes me up.

(also I always see SOMA as an apology for AMFP from Frictional Games, and I fully accept.)
