The performance is dreadful. I will be changing my review to positive once it is fixed.

I can tell already this game's gonna be good because there's a Kaiji reference in the first half hour

This game looks and sounds amazing, but that is unfortunately all that it has going for it. The pacing is extremely slow, even by JRPG standards. Random encounters is a mechanic that needs to die, or at least be optional, because it discourages exploration, and each battle takes several minutes. The story, although I haven't finished it, has not been interesting enough to keep me hooked, and party interactions, which are a staple of what makes JRPGs fun, are practically nonexistent. If this game's music and art were applied to a good story with faster paced combat, it would be a masterpiece, but as it is there are too many flaws which make playing this just a slog.

One of the greatest visual novels. Well written, compelling romance. Story is well paced, mature, and engaging the whole way through. Voices, music, and art are top notch as well.

This does not hold a candle to StS or Monster train. What makes those games great is that they're simple to learn but difficult to master, while this game is overly convoluted with regards to status effects and damage types though the complexity does little to add actual depth to the combat. The combat is too slow and too repetitive, the cards themselves are very simple and uninteresting with little to no potential for synergies so deckbuilding is boring.

I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the previous trails in the sky games. This game tells a story centered around Kevin while also tying up loose ends, and expanding on character development from the first two games. There is less of an emphasis on storytelling in 3rd than in FC and SC and more of a focus on dungeon crawling. However, the story it does tell is still compelling and Kevin is a great character. The combat feels slightly more refined and balanced than it ever has been in this series. The only negative thing I have to say is that some of the side stories drag on for too long and don't really go anywhere (kloe is the worst offender). Overall this is very much worth playing for fans of trails in the sky.

You already know what you're getting into with this game; if you liked the first three entries odds are you will like this. While my overall experience with the game is positive, There are a few issues. The foremost problem with this game is the pacing. CS 4 takes seventy hours to tell a story that could easily be told in under forty. There is more bloat than in any other game in the series. The first act in particular feels sluggish and lacking in tension. But you may not be bothered by this if you're fine with a very long rpg with a story that really takes its time.
Regarding the positives, the combat system is more refined than it has ever been, though I recommend you play on nightmare because this game is incredibly easy to break. I also enjoyed the customization options regarding the characters and quartz you're able to use, it is much less limited than in CS 3. The music is still very good. The story and overall resolution to this 200+ hour series is not amazing, but it is serviceable. You're basically just getting chuuni ♥♥♥♥, same as in every previous entry. I wish that this game's story had better writing, that is the main thing stopping it from being a 9 or 10. Even with its flaws, I'd rate it a 7 and if you've already sunk over 150 hours into the past three games you might as well play this.
