HellDivers 2 has had a bit of a rough launch, and is not without issues, but at its heart, I genuinely do love this game. It faithfully carries forward the same basic formula from the first game, but is distinct enough to preserve both. It's fun to play, rewarding enough, and just extremely cool. It's one of those games that achieves its aesthetic intent perfectly, and there's something to be said for artistry - The limited information in an over the shoulder view makes it feel like a deeply anxious, frenetic war zone where constant awareness is your best friend, and in that way, it's real fun.

For me to mention the server problems would be redundant, you already know about them. They're annoying, but also slowly abating. However, in terms of actual creative decisions, there's a few things here and there that bother me - The game can feel needlessly randomly punitive at times - Random explosions from seemingly unknown places, being flung about by unseen forces - Maybe it's bugs, maybe it's intended, but it feels random and random feels annoying. In Helldivers 1, you could be relatively certain that you did something wrong if you died. Or the guy next to you did. But I get the distinct feeling in this iteration that randomness can strike at any time, and it's just rather frustrating. Additionally, while single player is tenable, it's rarely pleasant - You'll die often and at random, you'll feel woefully underpowered. It's just very clear throughout that you're intended to have a group, which I find somewhat unfortunate.

All in all, worth playing, though I hope that Arrowhead shores up some of the peripheral problems with their game - 2 factions is rather light, the primary weapons don't feel terribly diverse, and the servers are a mess.

TO PREFACE : This game is in early development so I think it would be wrong of me to hold its flaws against it too strongly, but there are flaws.
The game can be extremely janky, and right now the gameplay isn't particularly varied. It needs some variety added later or it will die quickly.

That said, what is there is extremely fun and a very solid premise.

A Strange, often surreal throwback to an era where the internet was equal parts magic and tragic.
