PB FACTS:

1. Polar bears are actually black, but their fur is hollow and takes on a white color because of their structure.

2. An adult male polar bear can weigh up to 1700 pounds, while an adult female PB weighs around 400 - 750 pounds.

3. A polar bears scientific name is ursus maritimus.

4. An adult polar bears maximum sprint speed (on land) can reach up to 25 mph.

5. In the water, a polar bear can reach up to 6 mph swimming. They have incredible endurance and can swim for several hours at a time.

6. Adult male PB's can grow up to 7.9 - 9.8 ft tall, while adult females can grow up to 5.9 - 7.9 ft.

7. A polar bears primary prey are seals. They will often camp near a seal's breathing hole in the ice, and wait for a seal to emerge.

8. Polar bears have a sense of smell so strong, they can smell a seal on the ice from up to 20 miles away.

9. Similar to whales, dolphins, and seals, polar bears are also considered marine mammals.

10. Polar bears are the only species of bear that will actively hunt and kill humans for food. :)
