So this game was definitely an experience. I liked the story and a lot of game mechanics.
First of all, I have not played the first game (but I know most of its story). I liked that these stories are connected, while not feeling like a copy-paste or vastly different.
First things first. I'm not sure if the comparisons of the first and this game are valid, as I understand SOME of the gripes with the comparisons. Regardless, I'd like to talk about what I liked and disliked:
Cons:
1. A lot of the controls on weapons and vehicles are... Less than desirable. First time I used a Snowfox, I couldn't determine how to turn at all, and by the time I figured it out, I had already lost interest in it. I didn't use it for my second play-through, despite exploring every inch of the surface.
2. I can tell that the story isn't perfectly aligned or executed, which I suppose can be excusable because this game is not a super story heavy game. It's more exploration based.
3. The map is... alright, but can be less-than-desirable most times. During my second playthrough, I made sure to focus on the story a bit more. Collect all PDAs, recorded conversations, scan everything, ETC. It was a bit difficult to follow the story, as the map was seemingly directionless and you had to visit locations more than once, which made it difficult remembering everything and where to go. The story keeps you moving and busy, which isn't inherently a bad thing. I eventually caved and began looking up locations, as it proved difficult to figure out where to go next.

Pros: I liked the story regardless of its issues. I liked that the story wasn't just simple and easy to complete. There are (technically) two storylines that you can finish. I wish that they had written this story since before development though, to iron out some of the flaws. It's inevitable to have plotholes or issues especially when a story is as strangely complex as this one.
Contrary to popular belief, I think this game was still scary. I believe that the reason people say it's less scary is because they played the first game. Comparatively, the first game had a lot more open and dark space. Along with how the story was easier to follow this time around, the sheer mystery and unknowingness of the first game makes it a lot more terrifying. If people played these games for the horror and scary aspect, that's up to them. But I can tell that wasn't the intention for either games (to be horror games), and I can see that evident in this game.

One issue I found with the story is that it's very easy to make mistakes. Like visiting places before you're supposed to, which can be very confusing. Or even never picking up Al-An. In my first playthrough, I actually didn't investigate the distress signals until my friend had told me that I had to for the story. I had almost no incentive to do so, as it was already difficult to leave base with a reliable food and water source, much less to the deeper, more daunting waters. By the time I did pick him up, I had already explored almost all biomes and almost cured the infection.

Overall I liked this game. It fascinated me enough to completely restart to do things correctly. I liked that Sam's story was conclusive, but didn't go into morbid detail about how she died. It may help that I never played the Alpha versions and not played the first. I liked that you could only gain control over your situation if you're persistent enough.
I had once accidentally ventured too far with too few purified water into the Lilypad biomes. With about 20 points left in water, I managed to construct a base solely for the purpose of getting more purified water. I did not have a water filtration suit, either. I really enjoyed that such an option wasn't impossible and you could achieve almost anything on the spot if you're stubborn.
I killed four Shadow Leviathans with only a drill arm and a repair tool. I killed them because I knew they wouldn't respawn, and I knew I'd have to go back into the crystal caverns once again. Those things scared the ever living crap out of me and it was nice having the option to get rid of them for good. Enough persistence rewarded me.
I also built a base on Glacial Basin with the goal of creating a Spy Pengling, as I hadn't done so prior. I BARELY had the capability of doing so and it allowed me to obtain what I needed to in the pengling caves.
I never died in my second playthrough. I played relatively safe, while taking risks. My gripe with this is that the Prawn Suit makes things far too easy in my opinion after acquiring. I barely used my Seatruck after creating my Prawn, as I could use it for decently quick travel in the water and on land. I feel as though the Prawn should be a bit balanced out to make the experience less easy? But that's just me.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the conclusion. I really enjoyed that the ending played out the way it did. Although I adore villains and antagonists, this story didn't have any particular antagonistic figures. Except the Chelicerates though, the amount of times they snuck up on me is criminal.

I admire the artwork and work that went into this game. While visual novels are definitely not my kind of thing, I enjoyed this.
This game is honestly best played with multiple people who read lines from the characters. It makes the game flow a lot better for sure.
artwork - 8/10
characters - Wraith = 10/10, Huntress = 9/10, Trapper = 8/10, Spirit = 4/10
dialogue - 7/10
100% completed achievements!
I recommend to anyone who enjoys a visual novel that's as innocent as a horror/romance visual novel can get.

It's difficult for me to recommend this game. Having about 1,500 hours, I have enjoyed this game as far as it will take me. I like every aspect of it, except the boss battles. Boss fights just aren't my thing.
First I will go into the cons.
Every map seems to follow a very particular... Meta, if you can call it that with a couple exceptions.
1. Typically you want to tame:
anky for metal
doed for stone
therizino for wood
pteranodon for travel.
Almost every game I started REQUIRED these actions. Otherwise I was going to be grinding endlessly for a stupidly low amount of resources for high resource crafts. It's just not efficient, and after repeating this dozens of times, it gets very tiring.
2. Building is an issue. Not one bit of it is enjoyable. Getting the resources, finding a perfect base spot, and building are all frustrating due to the many scuffed bugs that happen during building in particular. Most of the time I dread this, in fact.
3. The absolute necessity that is meta. If you wish to do well, in single player or pvp, you must do specific things. Tame specific dinos, build in inaccessible areas, and breed for hundreds of hours. The game feels very stale, especially for those who are not masochists like those who unironically play on official servers.
4. Most buggy and glitchy game I've ever played. I can't even get into words how frustrating it is losing your character and/or your dinos to a mesh glitch.

Pros:
1. Once you've worked yourself up from a measly little grub on the beach, boy do you feel powerful. The game feels extremely rewarding for pushing past your frustrations and annoyances. Nothing can stand in your way, though when building up, it is very much possible to lose every little thing you worked for. Creates a sense of danger every moment you play the game, which is nice for those seeking a thrill.
2. Highly customizable settings are this game's best attribute. It's truly amazing how you can either play a relaxing save or constantly dangerous and thrilling gameplay. It's all up to you.

Not much else I can say besides, play the game if you're a masochist :)

Anmeldelse fra tidlig tilgang
While The Isle has many flaws, I must be real when I say that I have thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the game's development.
I had gotten into The Isle shortly after Legacy stopped getting updates and awaited patiently for Evrima. The launch for Evrima was heavily flawed, and had the game in one of its worst states in its lifespan, but I genuinely believe that it is infinitely better than the Legacy branch.
On Legacy, its combat mostly relies on knowing numbers and a few exploits/advantages such as differing hitboxes, knowing how many bites it takes to bleed out a specific dino, and so on. The fights, in my experience, majorly relied on who messed up first. And usually if you screw up just once, it's GG. This branch often made me feel helpless, as in most scenarios, there genuinely wasn't much you could do if you're not particularly skilled. Certain dinos bleed faster, and thus could be bitten just a few times, even taking exchanged hits but you are still screwed because regardless of how you take it, there was absolutely not a single thing you could do. This situation was quite common in my experience, especially with high-skill "fights".

Evrima feels a lot different. Every fight is determined by mistakes, diet system, your placements, everything. You can actually lose other dinosaurs in the foliage, unlike in Legacy where it was much easier to track. This branch feels extraordinarily natural and I genuinely believe they did a great job portraying this. While it has its flaws, as any game does, I can't recommend it enough for people who want a natural-feeling game. Whether you want to play Legacy or Evrima.

Been playing this game for approximately 4 months. So far I've been having a blast. So many fresh perspectives to go on. Want the adrenaline of being chased by blood thirsty killers? Play survivor. Want to dominate seemingly helpless people? Play killer.
There is so much behind this game, and if there's any point where you want to become a part of it, now is the time. It's had a rough past and the community sometimes has a bad attitude, but it has definitely improved since back then.
Frequent updates. Sometimes they make questionable decisions, but I don't know any game company that doesn't. Hope this helps some people decide whether or not they want the game.

Edit since last review: Still recommended.
This game requires a lot of patience to play effectively, though how you play is your choice. The only thing I can really advise you to do is NOT PLAY TO GET UNDER OTHER PEOPLE'S SKIN. People play games to unwind and have a good time, and if you're playing just to annoy others, then you are what's wrong with the community.
I still thoroughly enjoy this game. It has its issues, as any game does. Main problem for me though is the community acting like entitled six-year-olds.
