It's Animal crossing but 95% off and filled with jokes your inner dad can only find funny. Definitely recommend if you want to let out a little bit of country in yourself.

If this game is the spokesperson for the “earthbound inspired RPG thats an allegory for suicide and depression” trope, then it sure as hell knocked it out of the park and hopefully will be the last to do it.

I discovered this game around launch completely blind and unaware of it’s existence and the amount of dedication that was put into this game. By the end of it, I was silent crying and never felt so moved from a story about overcoming grief and embracing genuine growth before. The visuals were so clean, music so good it can practically tell the story on it's own, and the charm of the world including all the characters that inhabit it makes everything truly feel alive.

When it comes to the gameplay, i can admit that the typical RPG fights can feel very repetitive especially on repeated playthroughs. However, the simple rock paper scissors emotion mechanic makes fights engaging enough to sink your teeth into it thanks to it being easy to understand. Also, be thankful that grinding is optional to get through the whole story. The main focus is exploration and discovering more about the detail filled characters and the weird ambiguity looming over the game. If given the chance, This is a rare moment in video games where the overarching story and downtime is more interesting than the gameplay loop. This game is easily 20+ hours even just for a first playthrough. Extremely impressive considering they used a game engine that has been around since the early 90’s (RPGMaker) and made it clear they would die on that hill to stick with using it.

One of my greatest joys was sharing the experience with others and making them play the game for themselves. Seeing how so many different kinds of people interpret and interact with OMORI makes it so fascinating to watch. Giving your friends future PTSD never felt so satisfying. Hell, it may just even make friendships stronger.

After learning about it’s development, the team behind it, and playing the game 4 times discovering something new each time, this game is a masterpiece. I recommend it to anybody even if you’ve never played an RPG before. I highly recommend going into it as blind and as open minded as possible. The themes told in this art piece are truly more than the sum of their parts. I could go on and on all about this game but im not licensed to do so cause im not a psychologist.

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love OMORI.
And you should too :)
