Russian Gulags Turn to Counter-Strike 2 Case Farming for Prisoner Labor, Reports Claim
By Ivan Petrov, Moscow Times
May 16, 2025

In a bizarre twist of modern incarceration, reports have emerged alleging that the Russian government has implemented an unconventional labor program in its notorious gulag prison system. Instead of traditional forced labor like mining or construction, prisoners are allegedly being tasked with playing Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) to farm in-game cases, which are then sold on the black market to fund prison operations.

According to anonymous sources within the Russian penal system, the program, dubbed “Operation Case Drop,” began in early 2024 as a pilot in several remote Siberian facilities. Prisoners with basic computer skills are assigned to dilapidated computer labs, where they play CS2 for up to 12 hours a day. Their objective? To grind matches and earn weapon cases, stickers, and other in-game items that can be sold on platforms like Steam’s Community Market or third-party sites.
“It’s surreal,” said a former inmate who claimed to have participated in the program before his release. “You’re in a freezing gulag, surrounded by guards, but instead of breaking rocks, you’re headshotting opponents in Dust II. They don’t care if you win or lose—just that you keep playing to drop cases.”

The Russian government has not officially acknowledged the program, but leaked documents circulating on dark web forums detail its structure. Prisoners reportedly earn “case quotas” to meet daily, with rewards like extra rations or reduced sentences for top performers. Failure to meet quotas, however, can result in solitary confinement or loss of privileges. The documents also suggest that prison administrators use VPNs to mask their locations and funnel profits through cryptocurrency exchanges to evade international sanctions.

Economists estimate that CS2 case farming could be a low-cost, high-yield operation. A single high-value case, like the Revolution Case, can fetch $5–$20 on the market, with rare skins netting hundreds. With thousands of prisoners playing simultaneously, the operation could generate millions annually. “It’s a twisted form of digital slavery,” said Maria Volkov, a human rights advocate. “The prisoners see no profit, and the state exploits their labor in a global gaming economy.”
Valve, the developer of CS2, has not commented on the allegations. However, gaming communities on platforms like Reddit and X have erupted with speculation, with some users joking that gulag prisoners are behind the recent surge in low-skill players flooding CS2 servers. “No wonder my teammates keep throwing molotovs at themselves,” one X user quipped.
Critics argue the program highlights Russia’s desperation amid economic sanctions and a strained prison budget. “They’ve turned gulags into cyber sweatshops,” Volkov added. “It’s dystopian, even by Russian standards.”
As the international community demands transparency, questions remain about the ethics of virtual labor and whether other nations might follow suit. For now, the prisoners of Russia’s gulags may be racking up kills in Counter-Strike 2, but their real battle is for survival in a system that sees them as little more than case-farming bots.
