Started playing in 2018 and have my fair share of hours from playing on and off, I can confidently say that while the game is very fun-- The devs are so unbelievably money hungry that it makes supporting them a chore. Base Payday 2 is a quarter of a game that can only be realized through hundreds of dollars worth of DLC. You can only play DLC content if someone else hosts it but new players are hard-handicapped because of the amazing weapons, perk-decks and attachments being gatekept by DLC. It straight up makes so many builds or guns less-optimal or unviable because you haven't shelled out more money to the company. It's a disservice to both new and returning players to need to pay so much to be on the same level as others on higher difficulties like Death Sentence. I understand that people have gone out of their way to beat the highest difficulty in the game without any DLC however, people with all the DLC have far more agency and creative freedom with guns and builds compared to the same 3-4 Hacker/Crew Chief/Ex Prez builds that you can assemble without DLC.

On the specifics of DLC, I purchased what's now known as the "Legacy Collection" bundle for Payday 2 back in 2018 with the promise that all future content such as heists, weapons and attachments would be added in as well upon my purchase. Now returning to the game, they scrapped that promise and funneled a bunch of new content into a separate bundle that (without a sale) costs nearly 200 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dollars for nowhere near as much content. I can't in good faith continue to support a company that takes advantage of it's playerbase in this way.

I can't recommend this game enough, solid 10/10 from me. The game is beautiful. Gameplay feels amazing with lots of variety to shake up the combat and exploration. The story is deeply interesting. The music is perfect. The boss fights are thrilling and challenging. It's just the perfect mix of fun and difficulty. It's not too overbearing or too long and I haven't encountered a single bug, it's extremely well polished. I've 100%'d this game and I could only ever wish for more, I will definitely be buying the sequel as soon as it's out!

This is truly one of the greatest story games ever made. Project Moon's character writing and world-building is amazing and makes every aspect of the city shine no matter how grotesque or bloodstained the view might be. If you enjoy a (VERY difficult) challenge, don't mind the intricacies of card games or the slow-building longevity of a well drawn out story and have a strong stomach. This is absolutely the game for you. Full price or on sale, you are in for one hell of a ride.

I really wish steam had a "Mixed" option for reviews. The game is decently fun as is but it's really lacking when it comes to classes, meta-progression, builds and enemy variety. Deadlink has a total of 4 classes with unique special abilities at the time of this review and they can feel terrible to play at times. Each class has a primary weapon which cannot be changed and a secondary weapon that can be changed but CANNOT be reloaded by normal means. 3 out of the 4 primary weapons feel TERRIBLE to use with the Engineer's rifle being the only decent option because if it's large magazine capacity. This game throws swarms of enemies at you and having 2-6 bullets per reload to dispatch 25+ enemies per room feels miserable. Especially when each enemy takes half a magazine or more to kill later on in the run. As for secondaries, most of them feel incredibly weak with it being entirely determined by RNG whether or not you will receive an upgrade for them throughout your whole run. Not even to mention that ammo for secondaries is limited and you must either kill a ton of marked enemies to replenish your ammo or go around the arena smacking orbs for very little ammo.

The Meta-progression really hinders this game. It's really exhausting having to crank out 2-3 runs just to get an upgrade to take 10% less damage for the rest of the runs. Class upgrades are locked behind different tiers of meta-progression and can sometimes make you grind for hours for a useless upgrade like "Using your ability on orbs makes it last a second longer" or "Each second spent using your ability generates 1 shield per second" when the ability is 2 seconds long. Some of the upgrades are ridiculous and some should just be a part of the base kit because they're so meaningless and a waste of very valuable resources.

When it comes down to builds, there's no word that I can use other than disappointing. The game uses a system called "Implants" for builds with each implant having an active function and a passive function and a required "Energy" limit for each mod. Energy only affects the active portion of a mod, not the passive so if you don't have a mod in the right slot for the energy requirement to be fulfilled then the passive will still trigger. The implants in this game have very weird and in most cases useless functions like having an extra grenade or an extra jump or more explosive barrel damage or more damage when midair (In a game where 98% of the time you're on the ground.) More often then not I get completely useless mods instead of ones that actually help like elemental mods and I don't know if the game is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with me at this point. It doesn't help that the number of implants you get is very low with the only consistent way to get them being from reward doors after battles. The only other ways are from random events, vending machines (If you get the meta-progression upgrade) or random homeless people. I really feel like the pool of implants should be heavily reduced to remove most of the ♥♥♥♥ ones or that you should have more opportunities to get implants. It would change runs from being a slog to feeling like a nonstop machine every once in a while.

Enemy variety is also lacking, with the same enemies being present throughout the entire floor and never changing until you get to the end of the floor. You'll be fighting the same 3-4 enemies every floor in different numbers until you reach the boss and end up in a new area. The cycle continues to repeat until you reach the end or die. There's a melee enemy, a ranged enemy, a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying enemy and a type of drone or two. That's it for the whole game. The novelty runs out at around your 3rd run and I really wish there was more to shoot at.

In summary, I do enjoy this game but it really needs some work. It's maybe worth it on sale but don't get your hopes up regardless of the price tag.

Saved a baby squirrel from getting eaten from a bobcat only to have that same squirrel eaten by a hawk right in front of my eyes. 10/10 would save that squirrel again.

The base game is well worth $3, a cute fun rhythm game to pass the time to. The dlc is a huge expansion but I'm not sure it's worth $30, get it when it's on sale if it ever does go on sale.
