I played this game on mobile, and when it launched on Steam, I had been quite happy to see how it would work and how it would evolve in the future. The conclusion is quite dissapointing.

Let me begin by saying that the price of the game is not justifiable in any way, most of the "tribes" you unlock here bring nothing new to the game; to put it simply, it's better to stay in the free version on mobile, as Steam adds nothing new.

The other big problem is game design itself. Some of the tribes are simply broken, and others are too weak. For example, it's easy to break the game with the "aquarion" tribe by spamming the "tridention" unit, which does not require any sort of positioning or thinking. In fact, most of the "tribes" stuck behind a paywall are simply overpowered, which turns this into a Pay-to-win game. This begs the question - why couldn't this game stay on mobile? If one pays a relatively high sum of money for Polyptopia on Steam, why couldn't the game developer make the payable "tribes" weaker for the sake of game balance? This Pay-to-win mechanic is a glaring issue in multiplayer; on mobile, one won't notice this, but after paying for the game and seeing more paywalls thrown in the face, I don't think the player has any reason to try to get better at the game. The low price of these overpowered "tribes" is not a justification - this is just typical mobile game strategy of demanding from the user tiny but consistent paymets - microtransactions.

Lastly, the hillarious thing with this game on Steam is that it has an "esports" account... Seriously? Esports? For this typical mobile game? Yep, the game creator had the bright idea to try to turn this unbalanced mess of microtransactions into an "esport". Imagine if that generic mobile game that you see on the weird Youtube ads all the time tried to style itself into an esport with its depopulated "tournament" multiplayer section. Sure, Polyptopia demands some thinking, but it is still a Pay-to-win game with those classic mobile game microtransactions.

It's already been 3 years since the game got moved to Steam, and in those 3 years, essentially nothing changed and no effort was made to adapt to this new environment. My piece of advice - just play the game on mobile for free, don't bother buying the "classic" tribes, as those add very little, you can buy the tribes which are locked behind paywall on PC if you want to beat some randos on multiplayer, but I am sure that enjoyment will fizzle out in a couple of hours due to the fact that those Pay-to-win tribes demand no thinking, and therefore provide no reward.
You would feel much better donating those 13 euros to a charity organisation and downloading this game for free on mobile.
