The steam version of this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken, get the unofficial patch and launch it through that. This is one of the most exceptional games I have ever played though. It is rare to see a game that is truly exceptional in so many ways. Sure the combat is rubbish, and the game is not always very stable. But if you can overlook those flaws, this game has some of the best writing, voice acting and atmosphere I have ever seen. The ost is excellent as well. My second favourite game of all time.

"Just lost my whole save for no reason, it does no matter how good the gameplay is, this is unacceptable. This game is great besides that, but I can not recommend purchasing it in this state"

That was my review, but the game is fixed now and the developers are constantly improving the game. Great game 8/10.

This is a good start, but it needs polishing and more content. The zombies especially, in my opinion, need a total rework. They are very easy to kill and just sort of a joke.

7.5/10 overall. Before the new 343 industries games this game was by far the most controversial halo game. While I personally love it and think it has amazing aspects to it. The game just is not as
good as it should have been.

Movement:
The movement itself is fine, but armour abilities particularly armour lock and sprint just ruin the balance and pacing of the game. Almost completely in some instances. I see what they were going for, but the execution was just not great at all. 4.5/10

Gunplay:
The gunplay in previous titles is excellent. It’s highly skill based, crisp, gives more then sufficient audio and visual feedback. While this game does introduce some weapons that enhance the sandbox. I just feel as if it is one step forward and two back. The DMR just is not as skill based as the Battle Rifle in Halo 2 and 3. You don’t have to pace your shots as much, and it is much easier to just spam it at someone to kill them. Do not even get me started on the bloom. No idea what they were thinking with that feature, it just makes the game not competitive. The gunplay is clearly trying to appeal to a casual audience above all, and it doesn’t succeed in spades, but it isn’t bad either. It lacks a true skill gap I feel These issues aside, I still do think the gunplay is above average, but it is by no means exceptional. 6.5/10

Map design:
The maps in this game are pretty good, but spawning can be an issue on some of them to an almost infuriating degree. My only major complaint with the maps besides that is that they just reeused assets from the campaign. And I do think some of them are too big and open for Halo’s arena shooter gameplay. It does get additional marks though for its sheer variety of maps, even if all are reused save for the DLC. 6.5/10

Sound design:
The sound design in this game is great. From the background music, the gun sounds. While I think Halo 3 has better gun sound effects. The ones in this game are still good. They feel powerful and crisp. The campaign makes excellent use of music and knows exactly when to play certain pieces and evoke emotion from the player. 8/10

Graphics:
Compared to the other titles this game has a more realistic art style due to it’s setting. Reach is meant to feel more familiar and homely. It is one of the most important planets to humanity. This isn’t one of the Halo rings we are talking about. The game also has a much more somber tone compared to the mainline series games. This is reflected in the art style I feel. The graphics still hold up too, especially the weapon models and armour. Speaking of which each weapon and armour set is well modelled and detailed. Each piece of armour feels unique and has a personality to it.
8/10

Campaign:
Ok I’m going to start right of the bat by saying this campaign has some problems. Sure mods can now fix that but that shouldn’t matter in a critique of the game. The main issue is the balance. People who have played this game know exactly what I’m talking about. The white elites with their f*cking conclusion rifles in particular are infuriating and have made me just stop playing before on Legendary difficulty. I understand that it is meant to be challenging. But the game can get to a point where it is overwhelming and not fair. Not as severe as Halo 2 in this regard, but it’s still frustrating. Besides that the campaign is quite excellent. From the set pieces, voice acting, story, level design, unique gameplay, cutsscenes, characters. It’s all top notch really. The game really makes you feel attached to your team, and you feel for them as they slowly die and when you’re the only one left. You really reflect on what you’ve gone through, and if it was all worth it. 8.5/10

Forge and Custom Games:
This is where this game truly shines in terms of multiplayer. Personal bias aside, this element of the game is truly great. There are many weapons and sandbox elements. Tons of building blocks. A huge map to build anything you want on in Forge World. Nearly a dozen vehicles. The sheer variety of game modes is just incredible. 9/10

Armour Customisation:
Bloody amazing. There’s so many armour sets to choose from and they all feel unique and have interesting and sci-fi but grounded and simple designs. There is a real beauty in simplicity here. The armour sets are not over designed like I feel they are in the newer games. They’re perfect, really. F*ck the battlepass system though really.
9/10

User Interface:
The game’s user interface is a step above average but nothing too special. It has some interesting gimmicks like how some guns add to the user interface system such as the assault rifle, you can see how many bullets you have left on the counter of the gun. Similar to the pulse rifles from Alien. It has everything it should have: A minimap, compass, health. It’s all displayed clearly for the most part except for the compass it isn’t displayed clearly at all. 6/10

Miscellaneous:
This game has some other elements that are too minor to feature on their own. The game has a theatre mode which is quite good, adaquate but nothing special when it comes to the control customisation. The field of view can go up to 110 I believe is the highest but the view model starts to break at that point lol.

This game is very high quality. The gunplay is great, the graphics are good, the optimization is excellent. I've not seen a game with maps this large and graphics and models so detailed, with optimization this great for as long as I can remember. Kills in this game don't just feel like numbers, they actually mean something.
