SEGA’s Flagship 3D Platformer


TL;DR - Admissable 3D Platforming on the PC, there are games that have been ported to Steam that don't work, this isn't one of them. Broken camera, but players can easily adjust.


Taken With a Grain of Salt

As far as ports onto Steam go, Sonic Adventure Director’s Cut is done well. Although many argue that the Steam version, derived from several other ports, does a poor job of preserving certain qualities of the original SEGA Dreamcast release of Sonic Adventure, the game is still easily playable and is an enjoyable platformer. There are many mods that can be easily found and installed to solve lighting and texture issues, and the gameplay holds together far better than many a failed port that can be found on Steam. Sonic Adventure Director’s Cut does have many technical issues and rough edges. However, if you are looking for a casual, inexpensive 3D platformer, this game will probably get the job done.

Geared mainly towards younger audiences, the subject matter of the game is hardly sophisticated. For those who have never played Sonic Adventure or any of its ports before, keep this in mind, as the writing and story are often cringeworthy, and one of the least redeeming qualities of the game. Older members of the audience can still find enjoyment, however, in many of the gameplay mechanics, whether they are returning to this game for nostalgic purposes, or if they’re newcomers entirely.

Looking For a 3D Platformer?

Completion of the game can be much more lackadaisical than internet reviews of Sonic Adventure might suggest. If you’re simply looking to complete the Story Mode, you will most likely avoid all technical problems often associated with the game. For newcomers, the assortment of supporting characters allow for a change of pace from the main game. Sonic’s levels are the greatest in quantity and, some would argue, polish, but the other characters offer different challenges that, while far from perfect, are able to break up repetitive gameplay. The younger target audience might find these characters more appealing for their role in the story, while older audiences will be able to appreciate the variety of gameplay introduced in levels that require fishing, racing, or scoring points for destroying a certain number of enemies. The soundtrack, another childish and quirky aspect of the game, is fitting and in many places well written to fit different levels. Graphically, the Steam version is a port of a console game from the early 2000’s, so keep that in mind when you see the many awkward poses and ridiculous facial animations. Side game mechanics like the Chao Garden and the additional emblems for replaying levels with more stringent requirements can be avoided entirely if one simply wants to play casually through the game.

Looking For 100% Achievement?

As someone who purchased the game for both nostalgia and a love of 3D platformers, I can honestly say that Sonic Adventure has very many flaws. It took me approximately 40 hours to complete every achievement that the Steam port has to offer. Having simply done a casual playthrough of the game as a child, I knew the general layout of the whole game, and had explored most of the side mechanics. I include this here to explain that the 40 hours it took me to complete this game entirely was with prior knowledge of the game, needing to do very little exploration. That said, it would probably take someone unfamiliar with the game upwards of 50 hours, depending on how quickly they adjust to many of the quirks you might come across going through the game.

In regards to the most popular complaint with Sonic Adventure (which I’d like to also complain about), the game’s camera can at times be extremely poor. A casual playthrough will probably experience few to no camera issues. However, in order to complete the game’s achievements, each level is required to be repeated for each and every character, and so the player must experience these levels numerous times. In my 40 or so hours, the most glaring issues came from places such as Sonic’s Icecap prior to the snowboarding segment , Lost World in the water and dark rooms, Sky Deck in its entirety, and Final Egg in numerous areas (it’s the longest level), most egregiously during the fan segment , Knuckles’ Lost World when flying too quickly, and Big’s Icecap when trying to leave any underwater area, to name a few. In general, despite being a Sonic the Hedgehog game, moving and turning at extremely quick speeds can cause serious issues where the camera gets left quite far behind, and obstacles that are coming up very soon cannot be seen whatsoever. Many segments where a character bounces off a spring also do not adjust the camera properly, causing players to fall to their death that they are unable to prevent in any way at all.

These might seem like gamebreaking issues to some. However, those with even the smallest amount of patience can quickly adjust – they are byproducts of a time when 3D platformers by third party developers were becoming popular and therefore were encouraged to be produced. Quite infrequently will you find yourself going through a level and becoming frustrated with this game; if you’re not meeting the goal in time or can’t find the objective, there’s most certainly a trick or method you’re missing that can easily be looked up. There are a number of reasons that many people return to Sonic Adventure other than degeneracy, so taken with a grain of salt, Sonic Adventure is a relatively enjoyable and affordable 3D platforming experience.

What You Pay Is What You Get


TL;DR -
Unfinished and money hungry (new microtransactions every week, how exciting).
Developers are too busy playing Stardew Valley, RPG Maker and putting out tweets from conventions to work on the game and fix servers. You can check their social media accounts and Steam Profile pages if you don't believe me.

Unsurprising fact of the year: art producers have made all stage art after ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ release using raster images exclusively, rather than vector artwork. What this means is that, in order to create additional stages with the same theme (say, larger versions of the same stage for modes which allow for more players), the entire stage art with the exception of the background must be made from scratch. This has severely increased production time, and is also why most of the new themes have only one or two stages whereas the original stages made in pre-release have half a dozen variants. Use of vector images would allow for duplication of assets in ways that are, in this case, warranted and would make sense, and would cut down on production time immensely. Producing vector imagery is taught at most art universities in the freshmen year, keep that in mind. Check the subreddit for this game if you think I'm making this up, too; as long as they haven't purged the discussion topics it all should still be there.
Also, the game is still unfinished, in case anyone was wondering.

In an entirely unsurprising move, Blue Mammoth sells out even more than before by adding guest skins and characters. I seem to remember them saying that they were unable to add colors and skins that weren't just palette swaps because it would "take too much time to animate", what happened to that?

Uses a delay based network. Which means it's peer-to-peer and archaic as the '90's based platform fighter that they're derived from. This is what happens when you crowdfund games and when you take "e-sports" as an idea seriously. Go play Rivals of Aether.



Play if you enjoy:

- Fighting games: 1-8 Players!
- Weekly Updates: bug fixes and content patches galore!
- Spending no money: only in-game purchases are aesthetic, so whole game (all modes) available upon free install!
- Community: always a blast to connect with friends, or start your own clan and meet new people!

DON'T play if you dislike:

- Fighting games: 1-8 moshpit, with barebones single-player!
- Weekly Updates: thought last week's server connection was bad? Just wait until next Wednesday! Have top of the line intenet yourself? Too bad - servers have hit their limit and developers don't care! Finally adjusted to your character's priority? Use the wave taunt to wave "good-bye" to it, just play Hattori! "Adjust, spammer!" "There's no priority in this game, only hitboxes and hurtboxes!" Ex. Dee.
- Spending no money: I've always dreamed of seeing chests/crates in every game I ever played; good luck winning five thousand coins to even unlock a character!
- Community: on par with Counter Strike's army of eleven year olds! Did you know that if you play this game, you too can have "a degree in network software"? Bring several gallons of water to dilute the salt! And don't bother filing reports; you'll get plenty of death threats and Blue Mammoth won't do a thing about it!
