This game is definitely a game. There is a lot to do for new players however do not be fooled by the fact that it is free. You will need to buy DLC to truly experience this game. The current new player experience as of the Witch Queen DLC is god awful and is not representative of the game in the slightest, but underneath the crap is a truly wonderful game. The new player experience used to be amazing until they started getting rid of old content. Thankfully they recently announced they will no longer be getting rid of DLC content so hopefully in the future they can make a better starting experience. The gun play is good which is a given as it is a Bungie game and they made Halo. The amount of loot is insane and the variety of it is rather good thanks to the random roll perk system. They do reskin some things rather often, but that does not take away from the functional variety of weapons. This game also features platforming in its various activities and the movement mechanics involved in it are uniquely refined with a lot of movement tech to learn. The game Features both PvE co-op content and PvP matchmaking and PvP recently got an overhaul that is pushing it in a good direction. The PvP experience still leaves much to be desired however, those looking for a competitive PvP experience should not come to this game it is no CSGO. As for PvE it is rather refined with a large variety of activities and quests. There are 3 player matchmade missions called strikes, there are campaigns that can be played alone or with friends, there are nightfall missions to challenge yourself with and there is always the seasonal content should you invest in buying a season. There are also 3 player dungeons and 6 player raids that are not matchmade and they require communication with your team to properly execute the mechanics. There are LFG groups you can find online to find other players if you do not have friends to play the game with. I will often LFG myself and have had mostly good experiences however there was the occasional toxic players. One major complaint about the PvE experience is its lack of difficulty, but Destiny has always been a more casual experience. I believe the difficulty issue was solved with the inclusion of the Legendary campaign option, but some would disagree. I would however like to make it known that I do not recommend playing the game solo as it is an MMO and many endgame activities require you to play with others so if you are looking for a fun solo experience then this is not it. If you do not have friends to get into this game with you can always make new friends as you go through the game.

Destiny doesn't just offer good gameplay however, it also offers a fun and interesting narrative with a large and diverse cast of characters. Each character has their own personal narrative masterfully intertwined with the overall story which results in a character centric story. There is also a lot of cosmic storytelling as this game features all sorts of space magic which impacts the plot rather significantly. It can however be easy to get lost joining in at this point in the story and the game does not help new players to understand what is going on. If you wish to get into the lore of Destiny you will need to go online and search up the past story from Destiny 1, Destiny 2 Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken to be able to catch up story wise. It is a lot to watch as the story has been going on since 2014 so it can be a little overwhelming.

In short, gameplay is solid and has a lot of diversity. The story is wonderful, but hard to get into. Also the new player experience sucks and this game is best played with friends.
