Early Access Review
the steam bio for it states “SCUM aims to evolve the multiplayer open world survival game with unprecedented levels of character customization, control and progression, where knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival” Which i believe it does most of already, starting with the character creation, which isn’t all available yet but is still in a very good shape and looks to have very interesting features in the future. As of now you can set your character name, his body type via sliders and then his age which affects how many points you have to use in the skills section, all these skills have a different bearing on mechanics in game, things such as the Rifles skill affecting your ability to craft certain ammunitions same goes for survival skills affecting what food you can make, all the skills have interesting detail to them which makes for very engrossing character building!

Now on to one of my favourite mechanics in the game, Metabolism, which has its own entire menu, showing everything from how full your bladder is to how much vitamin K you’re getting. It is a mammoth system and has been implemented very well, i personally have never seen a system quite like this actually working in this type of game, you get the old school hunger and thirst but with Scum you also have to contend with illnesses and vitamin deficiencies. I love this system and all the information it gives you, however i could understand that some players might find it daunting considering all the information thrown at you, but with a bit time you get to know this system and how it works!

Onto the main section of the game, the world and PVP/PVE. The world of scum is lush and interesting, the scenery can easily have you distracted with almost italian style villas in coastal towns and industrial sheds and buildings in larger inland towns, with every single building giving you an opportunity for loot! Which is one of the core pillars of the game and again this have been done very well, loot distribution is very fair and almost to much some times but the loot we all want is concentrated in military and industrial compounds dotted across the map, now as well as other players fighting over these spots you also have AI mechs to deal with along with “puppets” which are basically the developers take on zombies, the mechs are large robotic juggernauts that are not to be messed with unless you have a few hours to spare and a few hundred rounds you don’t mind losing, they can however be snuck around as they walk predetermined paths, which make some bases a cake walk to get in and out of.

As for the PVP side of Scum, all i can say is that it works, the weapons have a good look and decent mechanics behind them so shooting is pretty simple, point and shoot! The melee weapons do require a bit of timing though as the melee combat system is a little reminiscent of for honor, with the system targeting individual enemies for you, which can be toggled to different modes.

So as an overview of Scum, its a solid 7/10 in its current state. Its a shining light in a genre of games that have not seen much change since the release of Dayz standalone, which in my opinion Scum has already surpassed by leaps and bounds, with over 1 million purchases already Scum seems to be the golden boy of survival shooters at the minute! Will anything dethrone it? Or will it stay top of the pile? Who knows!
