Edit: the Anniversary is over, so there's not a free copy of Morrowind on bethesda's website anymore. Feel free to check Bethesda's site on march 25th next year if you want a free copy and are willing to wait for it. if not, I believe this game still goes on sale every now and then. or you could just buy it at full price, It's up to you really.

Still here? Alright. This is by far the most interesting and in-depth TES Game, at least in terms of questlines and settings, according to a majority of the Elder scrolls fanbase (that is to say, fans of the series as a whole, not fans of just Skyrim), and as such, I'll be keeping this review mostly spoiler-free. wouldn't want to spoil the game, now would we?

some have complaints about the graphics, but that can be easily fixed through mods, especially now, in 2019 and on. the gameplay systems here are somewhat dated, for example, rolling to see if you actually hit and do damage to an enemy after you have already physically hit them.

this particular game is also a bit more wordy than it's sequels, with one of the main mechanics being interacting with npcs using only key terms that you've heard in their dialogue, and a verbose journal system for detailed quests (yes, even the fetch quests are detailed) without the use of map markers and fast travel, requiring you to familiarize yourself with the landmasses of Vvardenfell, Solstheim. and a part of Mainland Morrowind to get where you need to go. that being said, this game has some of the best quests and factions in the entire series, and you'd be missing out if you didn't at least give it a chance. The story is also heavily praised, but spoilers.

Now, as far as mods go for a first playthrough, I'd recommend playing a mostly vanilla game with mainly Bug fixes, and maybe some graphical mods if you feel like you need them. (edit: the guide i previously linked to linked to the step project's old guide. they recently moved the guide onto the nexus, and it seems to be updated, and focused mostly on graphical overhauls. here's[wiki.nexusmods.com] a link to that)

TLDR; this game get's 8 Filthy N'wahs out of 10 for me. a few archaic mechanics here and there, but overall, this game still holds up as one of the greats. plus, it's easily moddable on pc, that's always a plus.
