Yes, Commander.
For the first time I felt I did something worth while whilst gaming. Joke aside this game is like a hybrid of the Co-Op "Elevator Action" and "Contra" being able to shoot in all directions.

Great range of pew pew weapons, soundtrack is catchy, super fun and a worthwhile story.
In fact, the game was released in February 2024 but has described the UK following Keir Starmer's Communist takeover.

So, on point. When life imitates art as they say...

Can you hack into God? If you are a hacker where is God to hack into? And even if you find God, how do you know what God is? Such concepts are explored in this new chapter in the sci;Adv series from the Mages studio.

As a Sci;Adv series A;C it stands true to its core values. It weaves its narrative using a lot of deep scientific concepts intermingled with sci-fi tropes, conspiracy theories and of course conspiracy facts that require a reread (or two) after finishing it to appreciate it in full. And an adventure it certainly is. It has quite a fast pace with little down time and very short time to catch your breath, jumping from part to part seamlessly.

A;C is very much an attempt to recreate the magic of S;G. There is a very loose connection with S;G 0 that is finally revealed after the bad ending but not one I was hoping for. In fact, I am quite confused as to what timeline the events take place. Or which world layer? Fate lines anyone? Confused yet? In fact could A;C be the Steins;??? we never got. To avoid confusion this is NOT a time travel story.

Some of the mechanics of the game are similar to S;G. Rinse & repeat (saving and loading on this occasion) is used again and again as a means to predict the future and influence the past to progress the present. Occasionally, it becomes tiring because the mechanic is not explicitly explained. But then again fans of the Sci;Adv series will know by now that this is very much the case with all games to date.

Where A;C fails to elevate itself to cult status (in my opinion) is character development (or lack thereof). The story is too short (27-30 hours long) to allow for that. Was it budget problems that necessitated an expedited production? We will not know. What we do know is that the reading time is less than half compared to C;H and S;G. And that shows towards the end.

Pollon (the MC) is a normal character which is a first for SciAdv. He is like a white knight wishing to help people and aims to save the world. More of a caricature of a shonen manga story than the charismatic Okabe Rintaro or the neurotic Takumi Nishijou. He is part of a gang of hackers. We never learn much about his beliefs, his worries, his secret thoughts; we just get a small glimpse to his past. This could have been explored much more if there was such a will.

The heroine (Momo) is also uni-dimensional, which is again a missed chance before of her backstory. This is hardly explored further with only a glimpse of emotional tingles towards the end that nicely wraps around the beginning of the story. Again a similar trope to S;G.

The supportive cast is easily forgettable and some irritating (see the Cyber Force Dolls trio and the forced kawai Nanoko). Similarly to the two MCs they do not have a backstory and even what we get is hardly interesting to justify their existence beyond a filler cast.

The lack of inner monologues is what distinguishes this VN compared to other SciAdv novels, and in particular C;H, S;G and S;G0. All the cast is mostly talking to each other and we hardly see what they are really thinking of the extraordinaire situations they find themselves in. There is hardly any slice of life content, and that may be a good thing (see R;N). What we needed was double the story time.

In fact it is the villains that get more attention this time around and become the more interesting characters that add spice to the main dish.

The visuals, presentation and artwork though are exceptional. I liked the manga panels action sequences as it was a refreshing idea. I do not particularly like the MC artwork (Pollon) but this may be a personal taste (green hair anyone?). Many of the characters look and feel alive and in my opinion watching/reading it feels almost like watching a semi-anime. In some cases though artwork remain static though despite major developments in the story.

The music delivered by Takeshi ♥♥♥ is divine again and it is easily recognisable as it has all his signature elements. Makes sure you purchase the soundtrack of 52 songs if you purchase the game. It is so worth it ! Despite how many tracks are there though during action sequences the same 2 tracks are used again and again. This became tiring after a while.

The plot though is amazing and this is where Chiyomaru and his writing staff shine. In fact it is the most mature, complex and interesting of all Sci;Adv series. There are elements in the story that are part of Internet lore (I realised Cicada 3301 is a real story similarly to John Titor’s story previously), history, religion and conspiracies. Like a great architect Chiyomaru uses all these elements to tell a story that will compel the curious reader to explore further all these elements. It is almost like A;C acts as a pivot for rewarding its readers’ curiosity.

If only...if only we knew more about the protagonists this could easily surpass C;H or S;G/ S;G 0. As it was delivered I'd probably give it a 7 (I use my own scale with 7 being. "Really good. Misses elements of excellence. Anyone can still enjoy that").

I believe what may have happened is that the studio had a small budget due to the financial problems it had run into and it really excelled with what it had. I would recommend this VN to anyone who enjoys a good sci-fi story whether they are new or old into the Sci;Adv series.

And it would be so easy to produce a spectacular anime based on this source material. The models are already there, the artwork is there. They would not need updating and because of its fast pace it would suit anime fans if the story would not overwhelm them with scientific content. What we would hope is a 24 episode run that incorporate character development and a back story.

Whether you wait until the game is discounted (criticism over the short duration and full price was voiced at its release) or you support the studio buying it now at its full price hoping that they will continue churning out amazing stories is down to you, the reader. After all you are God, aren't' you?

What can anyone say about this visual novel that has not been said already. Unreservedly recommended.

Plays beautifully on SteamDeck (one of the reasons I bought a SteamDeck was to read all SciAdv visual novels)

I am so upset at this game. This is so unfair. Limited choices that always end up with the same accusations. "Don't do enough", "don't want to listen"...you get the idea.

The producers and creators do not understand the impact of playing unfairly with people's feelings. Of not giving choices and then accusing the "player" about the impact of those non-existing choices.

At no point I am able to influence impressions (or at least I do not understand hos this is done and have been a seaasoned video games player).

I want to kill myself now. I really do.

Cute graphics and music will not save the day I am afraid.

Do not buy or play this if your morale is wounded because you will end up in the pitts of hell and despair.

This "game" should be removed from the shop as soon as possible.

PS: I do not want a refund. I am not complaining to get one. I made an informed adult choice
of purchasing this product. I think the producers need to read this, sit down and think carefully about what they have created and the impact their content may have to players. I hope the developers will respond to this review.

People do not like Takumi, the main protagonist. Because he is soft. Because he is crying. because he is weak and constantly seeks help. But, Takumi could also be a real person, the lonely male in the flat next to yours.

It is hard to connect with Takumi and cheer for him if you are a normie. But if you are an Otaku, if society has pissed on you, if you are a kind soul deep down inside then occasionally you just retreat. You retreat to your 2 X 4 box and you live there. But because you need company since man is a social animal, you make up for the loss of normie human company by living in someone else's dream. You live in a delusional world, lost in your own thoughts; those being grandeur or victorious or self-defeating and catastrophizing. You talk to your waifu from your favourite anime who is always there for you, wakes you up in the morning calling you a dork with her chirpy helium moe voice. And you become a God in an online MMO where you make up for life's L's. But, isn't this why we all are in this platform chasing achievements?

We are all Takumi now.

Chaos;Head Noah is a mesmerising trip that mixes fantasy, psychology, drama, thriller elements with a sociology narrative creating a tale that sucks you in. There are some harem elements there and you can exploit them with the nine endings and your feel good delusional choices, but ultimately reality catches up with you.

The dark, sick and twisted reality of filthy adults who wish to control the world for their own delusions and psychopathy. Just like what happens today in the real world. The Committee of 300 is probably a real thing.

Chaos;Head Noah discusses mental health (in 2008) when mental health was not even a thing in the west. It is so ahead of its time, it is frightening in a way. How many times did i wonder whether Takumi (i as the reader) was watching a "real" event or was he (i) lost in my thoughts. What is real anyway in a world of possibilities?

Chaos;Head Noah is above all a human story about our weaknesses. And it is a story to be read and read again.

PS: having never read the original there are admittedly mistakes in the translation and I can see where this could have been done much better. But, I was waiting far too long to read this, so thank you Mages for this 2022 present.

[An update will be posted when I reach the true ending; so close now.]
