This game is definitely worth the asking price. If you have an active imagination like me, then the text is very good for directing an elaborate daydream where you're a ruler. It can also be fairly challenging until you learn how everything works (A process that is enjoyable).
Still, after becoming a massive empire with abundant resources, the game does begin to repeat itself. After defeating all the kingdoms opposing you, you have the option of spawning new kingdoms to fight. Sadly, for me, these new kingdoms spawn with a level of strength that are easy to beat and it just becomes a number game where you're skipping text and watching your numbers jump up.
I suppose my only gripe is that it could use more end game content and randomness to assist in preventing or delaying the point at which it becomes repeatable. Additionally, I would like to see an event chain you could start for marriage and children. Like say, marrying an opposing kingdom's royalty to unite the two lands or form a strong alliance. OR watching events of your heir growing and maybe setting up political marriages for them as well. Lastly, to make battles less monotonous, maybe add random events for battle that could assist or impair your side. Like a dragon showing up and toasting both sides, such fog that neither side could find one another and they wondered past each other to battle another day, A beam of light shining on your army or their's and a random god declares a hero among them (lol). Or to make you feel more like a master strategist, maybe have a list of random terrains, weather, and or factors that let you choose a list of strategies to go with that might help your battle if you choose well, or hinder it if you choose poorly, and of course and option to toggle them off for people who prefer less randomness.
Overall, I got 40 enjoyable hours out of an $8 game. This is 100% satisfaction and, as you developer is very active, I even have the option of replaying it again later to enjoy any changes he has added. If you are pondering the purchase, ponder no more, this is a game you can enjoy for hours and hours.

Thank you for the incredible review!

The 40 hours playtime is awesome and it's an honour.

I totally understand the late game bore, I'm always open to ideas of things I could do to make it less boring. I've tried to add tons of stuff to explore and lots of entertainment but as you say, once you get to that imperial size the game play loop does somewhat shrink and challenge is removed.

What do you think would work in this instance?

And as for the battle changes, it is uncanny how much of what you suggested has already been developed for the coming combat update.

The combat is in dire need of a rework so I've been working on an update that has taken me months, but so far I have:

* Over 100 different events at the start of battle
* 25+ random weathers that can overlay the battlefield
* A system where the weather can buff or weaken certain races (ie Lighning Trolls do well in storm, Fire Orcs will suck in snow)
* 60 different random weather events, ie lighning striking some troops during a storm
* 180+ random events in battle... including... A dragon roasting one or both sides of the battlefield (see, great minds think alike haha)

One of the weather types is a thick fog and idea of both sides not finding eachother is hilarious so I'll have to keep that one in mind.

Thank you again for the awesome review, was a pleasure to read.

Cheers

Still have to get into this game, but Dev seems great...
I remember joking around with him on these review threads calling it ´Warsim - The Realms of Assbona´.
Keep doing your thing, man!!!

As for the marriage suggestions it has been something mentioned quite a bit, I've always loved the idea of an ascii elf or orc or troll lady and your own character having a child who inherits facial features from both, meaning your half troll child could be an abomination.

And of course the idea of family and so on would add a great deal of possibilities for gameplay so it's something to keep in mind for the future.

I appreciate your comments on keeping the game true to my vision, I've learned in my development that my favourite version of Warsim is definitely one that many people have had influence and their thoughts on.

So many of the best features were shaped or straight up entirely suggested by players and it's made the game all the better, even if it has meant It's been in dev for years long than I thought it would, No regrets haha.

I totally feel you on the late game goal, a person on the discord recently mentioned the idea of a huge invasion force event and I do like the idea of it.

Your ideas of foreign world invasion are very cool too.

I've thought about the invasion force and figure perhaps there could be an invasion/rebellion etc scaled to be bigger than you to offer some challenge.

Ie your kingdom of 50 lands and 100k men, invaded by a force of Orcish Reavers with 250k men who take 25 of your lands in the initial invasion push.

It's a pleasure reading the review, I'm fortunate that I'm in the perfect place to be able to reply to them all to be honest, I understand if Warsim has millions of reviews I'd have no chance but I'm glad to be able to because I greatly appreciate it.

I can't wait to get the combat stuff out, it was super uncanny how many things you mentioned are already done as part of it though, great minds think alike haha!

Hey mate, I feel you on the comment size thing. The character limit is super small so it means writing anything of much substance can be a real problem.

I'll be replying probably in similar chunks haha

Sorry for multiple comments. I wrote too much and steam didn't like it. xD

Thanks for reading my review, Troy. This only reinforces the comment I made about how active you seemed to be int he community. Considering how much effort it takes to write large amounts of texts, make sure they work for multiple situations, programming them into the game, and bug testing, I am shocked you still have time to read as many reviews as you do, so thanks. I normally do not write reviews but this is a smaller community so I felt that it would be worth writing a review if it helped draw any more players into the game as I enjoyed it so much.

That really is uncanny. I think that is an update that will help a lot in that battle logs will no longer be something that you can skip due to their repetitive nature. And people like me know go through it again and again to see every possible event will enjoy finding new events when they do not expect it, especially the humorous ones that sneak in every now and again. lol

As for further suggestions for the late game, I am not an expert on game design, but as a gamer myself, I can take a shot at it. The first thing to come to mind is the lack of a late game goal, I suppose. I really enjoy the lack of a solid goal early on as it feels like you have freedom to do want early game and, other than keeping in mind the demonic hoard, you must decide your own path like a ruler would have to.

Still, while I think that is the perfect way to handle the game so far, to add more late game enjoyment, it might be best to add some more long-term goals. The first one I could say is that after spawning in so many new kingdoms I began to think 'Just how big is this world? xD". You put the demonic hoard in another world found through a portal, so have you considered alternate realities/worlds that the player can enter and invade similar to the demonic hoard?
