Saying it has bad writing is honestly insane. I know its completely self-objective but its a simple story line that flows smoothly with good pacing, tugs at heart strings and keeps you on edge with twists and turns.
Overall all I really think you should relax a bit more and just enjoy whats in front of you without comparing whats around it.
Just you and the Game. That's what single player games are all about :D
Also some very powerful attacks later on that require you to land the marks on-time with the attacks, so you gotta get the timing right the more you approach end-game.
Story is subjective, but it was fresh for me, i've enjoyed Garl a lot, i've gotten emotional over some of his lines, but again, subjective.
I also like that you don't really have a way to know what enemy is weak/resistant to what damage type, you gotta learn it and have a bestiary in your head.
Thanks!
